I have an MTH SP GS-2 Northern with a 5 volt PS2 system (20-3060-1), that has intermittent sound, especially when going around curves. I have re-heated the solder joints on the engine's internal tether connector, but the problem persists. Now I suspect it might be the tether.

I also have an MTH UP Northern PS 2, also 5 volt system (20-3044-1). Would it be safe to connect the tender of this engine to the SP GS-2 to see if its’ Tender & Tether work without the intermittent sound problem.  If it works properly, what MTH tether part number should I order for the GS4?

Thank you,

Ron

I wouldn’t play musical tenders period, …….if you’re confident you’ve re-flowed the engine’s tether PCB, the next logical step is the tether itself. Do follow the connections inside the tender, and make sure connectors are seated in the board, etc, etc, but yes, tethers do go bad, ….( sales pitch coming ) stock up on a few, as it sounds like you have more than one with the same type tether.  Tethers are sold at mthpartsandsales.com …….you’ll have to splice in a new tether,……here’s the part number..
