There is a photo of #216 (with the enclosed cab) on page 689 of Steam Locomotives of the New York Central Lines, Volume 2.  Numbers 212-216 were acquired from the NYC in Apr 1950 and retired in Sept-Oct 1954.  The renumbering was as follows: H-10b 212 (ex-NYC 2097), H-10a 213 (ex-NYC 2148), H-10a 214 (ex-NYC 2216), H-10a 215 (ex-NYC 2279), and H-10b 216 (ex-NYC 2335).  The photo of 216 was taken at McKees Rocks, PA in 1951, and the locomotive appears to be painted black.

Found this photo of the Division Point H10-b with green boiler.  I am very excited if this is the green we get.

See, I'm very interested in this discussion...'did it exist in green in the 1:1??'...'If so, which green is correct?'...etc., etc..

So Milwaukee Road Dave's picture of Division Point's HO rendition seems to have been a rhetorical contribution to this O scale discussion?  I've long, l-o-n-g since left the world of HO, but I do know that folks like Division Point are no slouches when it comes to doing their homework.  Also, I seriously doubt they succumbed to the world of fantasy in their offerings.

So, just what was DP's source of prototype info for the model shown??  Has anyone asked them??  Is that a legit question for sharing among the small fraternity of custom brass railroad model producers??  Or, is sourcing/sharing of 1:1 info part of the legally protected 'competitive advantage'??  (Seems like that would run counter to the posted intent of those maintaining historical archives of such information intended for public consumption.)

Sometimes it is apparent that members of the FOCB (Fratenal Order of Custom Builders) might be in competition.  Things like common scales, dominant flags, popular models (e.g., Big Boy, Warbonnet-anything, GG1's, Dreyfus-or-not Hudsons, etc., etc..) are more easily understood as competitive realms.  Whether there was a H-10b painted green...and what 'green'?....not so much.  And, yet, Division Point apparently thought so...for the HO market, which is NOT Scott's realm.

Ergo, it seems this sort of discussion drags on needlessly.  One phone call, one email, source provided, bada-bing, bada-boom.

Or, am I disrupting some good ol' bantering that's part of the Phorum phun?

BTW, I have no pending financial investment in the outcome.  Much as I admire 'Baldome Locomotive Works" (see cartoon posted earlier) creation of the NYC H-10 and its myriad modifications, and most any project that Scott and his team invest time in...I'm not a buyer-to-be.  So, I'll stop here.

Just wondering...curious.  But glad to see another steam offering coming from 3rd Rail.

KD

BTW...Was just glancing through the available HO steam models by Division Point in a well-known purveyor's website.  Every one priced at $2K-upwards.

It is what it is.

Phorum Phun indeed!  I'm not in on this for prototype fidelity, although I do generally strive for that.  I'm in because:

1.  I want another 3rd rail steam loco.

2.  I want P&LE as that fits my modeling scheme, need another second tier eastern RR to fill out locos for the Milwaukee Road and Eastern RR.  Plus, after I initially signed up for this model 4 years ago (?), I scratch built a Mullet River caboose decorated for P&LE to go behind the engine.  Now, because I have the caboose, I need the engine!?!

3.  I want an all weather cab

4.  I want a green boiler based on my first hand observations of the 3rd Rail GN offerings of the past (mikado, funky articulated etc.).

Based on all that, I don't care whether the paint scheme is prototypical or not, although I agree Division Point doesn't mess around so there must be some basis for them doing what they did.  While DP's green ain't exactly what I would prefer (more Southern RR green than not), I'd take it.  My preference, the GN green 3rd rail used in the past.  That Olive green that I saw from the Glacier Models A2 Berk pic, no good.

But, I'm still ALL IN on this project, it will be exceptional!

Breathlessly waiting,

Dave

The new projected price for the H-10 is $2,200 plus tax and shipping.  For me, that means the total comes to about $2,440. That's considerably more than what I paid last year for either the Overland P&LE 2-8-4 or Custom Brasss NYC 2-6-6-2.  I'd love to support 3rd Rail on this project, just not sure I can justify one for more than twice the cost of a U.S. Hobbies H-10b (of which I already have 2) or an Overland H-6 (have one of those too). On the other hand, if this was an H-5 (which has never been commercially produced in O Scale), I'd re-reserve in an instant.

I am on the fence with this locomotive. I am leaning towards reserving it but if I do reserve it, it will be the most expensive train item I have ever bought. It is a little outside my normal budget. I wish I could know what the extra costs will be? That would definitely help in making a final decision. How much will shipping be to the east coast? Will there be an extra fee for the container? Will buyers who do not live in CA have to pay sales tax? Sales tax is a biggie. Assuming a worst case scenario for shipping and container fees of $100 sales tax for me would be an additional $153 making the total for me $2,453.

For what it is worth at this point in the hobby, this is a once in a lifetime locomotive.  I suspect there will be two camps on this when it ships.  Those who purchased it and those who wish they had.

Knowing how rare high quality new brass steam projects are these days, if I was a NYC modeler I wouldn't hesitate to reserve one.

I agree with Jonathan 100% !!!! If you really want this loco, try to see if you can Stretch some $, sell on the forum some model you can live without - to pick up some $ to use on this model. You Won’t regret it !!!!! The drawings show that this is going to be an awesome model !!!  A few years back Scott offered a gorgeous T&P model. The $ were beyond what I called my top $ for a model train but I reserved, stretched my $ and sent multiple payments to pay it off. I’m so glad I did that. There won’t be another issue of it for sure. One and done !!!  It truly is the cornerstone of my collection.

It doesn’t get any better than this  !!! 😜

I second the agreement! I purchased the T&P painted in the AFT scheme. It turned out only ten were factory painted in that scheme and there are a lot of people kicking themselves for not ordering it or missed out altogether. Try to find this locomotive out on the secondary market! Good Luck!

Did the ‘Big Four’ railroad roster any H10a’s or H10b’s? If so, would it be possible for Scott to add this to the production run of H10’s?

Both were assigned to Big Four territory, …naturally, assigned locomotives would have carried “ New York Central Lines “ on the tender sides, and tiny initials ccc & stl on the bunker top….I believe Scott is doing Central proper, B&A, and two for the P&LE sub, one having an all weather cab…..
