Under The Hood: Gi-raffe Express EP-5!

Well, the shell, anyhow.

Had an MPC Pennsy EP-5 shell sitting around not doing anything...

If anybody has a spare set of EP-5 trucks they'd like to contribute to a worthy cause, drop me a line!

Great repaint! I love the two tone blue paint scheme. Did you design the artwork yourself?

Thanks!  I based the logo on some clipart I found online:

Basically, I inverted the colors...

Mitch;

I am not, in general, an enabler, so I know I am going to regret this... I have an old MPC Pennsy EP-5 which has been packed away for at least 20 years, and I have no plans to ever run this engine again. I only run command control these days and I am loathe to unwire things to see if everything is still working (that is the first corollary of Techno-Peasantry, aka if it ain't broke, mess with it not). That being said, you and your menagerie do bring a great deal of pleasure to the community in general (not to mention amusement to this Forum), so I would gladly donate the boarderline boneyard engine to you for a second chance at life. If you are interested, let me know where to send it.

And now, in keeping with my usual attitude this time of year,

Mitch;

As we used to say back in my days of paying disability and death claims, the check is in the mail. Wow... I can still do that with a straight face!!!

Hopefully Norma B. will approve of the new motive power.

An interesting side note... I was thinking about where I purchased the engine. I finally remembered that it came from Madison Hardware back in the 80's. They didn't have the box, just the foam insert, so Lou wrapped it in brown paper (which he did for many purchases). I removed the 30+ year old dusty crumbling paper before I packed it up.

I'll e-mail you the tracking number.

Paul's Pennsy EP-5 from Madison Hardware showed up, and it's a beauty!  <3

GEDC0635

First order of business before the test run:  Pop off the shell and oil the top motor bearing...

GEDC0636

One of the 161-300 wedge base bulbs was burned out, so a 19-300 pin base bulb was pressed into service.

GEDC0637

The Blue Beauty on its maiden voyage, handling 10 gi-raffe cars and a caboose without breaking a sweat!

GEDC0638GEDC0639

Future mods include installing an electronic horn, painting the pilots and sideframes to match the darker blue, and possibly upgrading the headlights to LEDs...

Once again, a million thanks to Paul for making this possible!

I guess I am officially an enabler... should have made it an anonymous donation!!! Looks like I've got one foot on the slippery slope, and one foot on a banana peel.

Glad I could help, Mitch, and glad the engine has found a good home where it will see some use.

Merry Christmas to you and the managerie

I'm a little disappointed that Fortescue wasn't on the hood for the maiden voyage. I guess he's got cold ossicones........

LOL!  Actually, Fortescue was helping with some ZW repairs.  Power off, of course.

He did inspect the Blue Beauty after the first test run, though...

Paint job completed!

I decided to use the postwar floor, a) to keep the MPC floor with the Pennsy shell and b) take advantage of the postwar floor's metal battery box's extra weight and bakeability for the enamel...

GEDC0645

Dunno where the sockets that came with the PW floor came from, but I added wiring to them.

GEDC0646

Floor and trucks torn down and masked for painting...

GEDC0647GEDC0648

While the primer was baking,  I cut down a plastic drinking cup for the speaker resonator.

GEDC0649GEDC0653

Since I had the power truck out, fresh traction tires replaced the 30+ year old ones.

GEDC0656

Primered!

GEDC0657

We shall skip the painting and reassembly, as I was too busy getting fiddly bits right to take happy snaps.

GEDC0658

After I finished painting, I realized I'd intended to use darker blue on the trucks and underbody.   Oh, well.  Turned out nice anyway, sorta reminiscent of the British Deltic locos...

GEDC0659

Test run on the point of a gi-raffe train!

GEDC0660

And on the point of my Blue Comet consist, with Norma Bates Kitteh supervising:

GEDC0664

Norma gives Fortescue the stinkeye...

GEDC0671

Came out pretty good, if I do say so myself!
