I am considering upgrading a set of Baldwin Centipedes to Proto 3. This is the older Proto 1 set with 4 motors.

I was just reading through the upgrade kit instructions and it says that a multiple unit with 4 motors would require 2 separate kits and each unit would be a separate powered unit. So, Im wondering would it be possible to make only 1 unit powered, remove the motors from the 2nd unit and just make it unpowered with lights, smoke and couplers?

Yes you can, and you can send the reverse coupler and lights back to the Trail unit.  But smoke is the issue.  You need to keep that trail unit a PS-1 smoke.  You might be able to works some relay logic to toggle on and off, but you can't run them all off the one board as previously stated.

IF you go two kits you have 2 engines and run them as an MU.  Or you go the PS-2 3V upgrade with a slave unit, but that has to be scratch built now.  I have done that for customers.  G
