I recently acquired a Weaver (G1723LP) brass 3 rail NKP Hudson with RailSounds.  I removed the tender shell in order to install a 9V battery as per the instructions in order to run the engine conventionally.  It states that the battery connector can be found among the wires and to attach the battery and secure it in the bracket provided.  I have not found the connector and no bracket is visible.  From my observation the only space for a 9V battery is at the back of the tender floor underneath the circuit board.  Presently the engine will only run in forward when using a Lionel CW-80 transformer.   Any suggestions on this would be welcome.  I hope to convert this engine to MTH ProtoSounds if I can find someone who can do this.

The battery, if you could find a way to connect it and a place to put it, is only needed to keep the sound from dropping out immediately when:

  1. You move the throttle on your conventional transformer to 'off'
  2. or, the engine rolls over dirty or poorly connected track.

With the battery installed sounds remain on for several seconds after a power dropout or shutoff.  It has no other purpose.

Your forward-direction-only problem appears to be because a previous user has locked the direction in 'forward'.  If you run in conventional mode and you place the 'program/run' switch on the bottom of the engine in the 'program' position it will only move in whatever direction it was travelling when you moved the switch to 'program'.   Move it back to 'Run' if this is the case and you should restore normal operation.
