What did you do on your layout today?

Hope everyone had a great Christmas. I know I did I’m on well deserved vacation this week hope to get you guys some updates on the layout and projects I’m working on.

As I used to tell a dear friend at work, you should never waste your time kicking yourself... especially when there is a long line of people more than willing to do it for you!!!   

UGGGG   Yesterday I did nothing after work!   Between working on the layout, putting out a Christmas display, doing drywall work and cleaning our entire house so we can host the family Christmas used me up!  Tonight I plan to do a little track wiring and thinking about ordering the LC+ Southern 1401 pacific.  May do that today.  And waiting for a few pieces of rolling stock to come in from that Atlanta hobby shop!  : )

Ran some trains, but now I'm pulling the engines off the track for some maintenance.  Side rods on 765 were squeaking so I figured I better do some maintenance on all of them.  This may also turn into a full track cleaning session. Tomorrow I may make a run to McCormick Hardware and pick up my two new SD70Ace's.  Its a three hour drive one way, but I prefer not to have them shipped.

Sporadic visiting and posting is something I wish I could stop.  There's way too much content here to just casually catch up on.  Also, when posting my accomplishments in the interim there is boat loads of content forgotten.  Rotten documentation habits I guess.  So, if I flood the screen with pics and text every now and again, please forgive.

Some may remember this piece of blasphemy from my demonic backshop. 

Well, it was time to breath life into that monster. 

The workings of an MTH GG1 fit the plastic Williams shell almost perfectly....just drilled a few new pilot holes for mounting.  Truck sides were drilled through  and ground above and below journals to add demension.

A little silver splash and I give you, AT&SF #13

The 765 looks to be running well now!!  That's a nice train it's pulling too! 

McCormick Hardware!!!  In beautiful Downtown Zelienople!!  I was just talking with my favorite Zelienople resident today; my 93-year old aunt!!  I need to make a trip in to see her.  Those trips can be costly since it is hard to drive past Jeff's store without stopping in!

Painted the plastic. Still can't figure out what or where I put the windows and doors. Maybe  do some sluething after dinner. Pics..........Paul

Bruce and everyone showing there Locomotives and layouts, Wow. I must say that the War Bonnet Sante Fe GG1 is a super good looking engine....Wow.. I finally had two full 10 hour dats to clean up my room, install bridges, etc....It’s Work.... a Lot Of fun.... However it’s a lot of fun....Thank You folks for the compliments on my layout. It’s now 20 years old....

Got a couple of "freebies" in the past several days.

First, I discovered in my parts cabinet a spare PW F-3 rear power truck which allowed me to replace the one on my CB&Q F-2 (former SF F-3 No. 2343); replacement was successful and the F-2 now pulls like it should.  The "dead" rear power truck is en route to Harmonyards where it will have its magnetraction restored.

Yesterday, I went through a different parts cabinet and found a Tomar Industries drumhead for the NP North Coast Limited which I have out on the Christmas tree layout.  So, installing the drumhead will be tomorrow's project.

And, put the second set of Lionel SF polished aluminum, 15", silhouette strip, passenger cars on the test track to check-out the GRJ LED product the previous owner had installed--they worked great.

Carl, isn’t it great when you find something you didn’t remember you had and have a great use for it!

Last night I ran my new, to me, MTH RK2002 Union Pacific F3 Diesels. Does anyone have  B unit for these? I modified the 4x8 layout to connect a planned expansion to run full O cars and locomotives. Designed with SCARM and purchased all items from Tinman. Thanks Guys! I'm buying full O cars but forced to use smaller locomotives due to the small layout. Can't wait to start building and run loooong heavy freight.

Thank you Mark as you are always upbeat. There are so many nice folks here on the forum that truly have great layouts, great ideas, great thoughts, and are always helpful when advice is needed. I thank God for helping me through this project as many folks from my church helped with the scenery and landscaping. I learned from years past to go with wide curves, tall clearances. This way, when friends bring their equipment over, we can usually run them. This is a great hobby. Thank You all.

Thanks for the photos, Larry--a tremendous layout with interesting scenes everywhere.

I'll never build anything like what you've built; but, I sure can enjoy what you and others have accomplished.

Lots of cool stuff and great pictures on here!!!! Great inspiration! I did do some wiring tonight. Planned on doing one siding but got all 4 of them done! That needed to be taken care of for nearly a year!

Larry, you’re welcome!  You are so right about so many great folks here.  I’m glad your friends from your church helped!  I agree, without God I could do nothing.

Stopped by my LHS after work. They had a NIB TMCC command base for $50. I bought it and the MTH TMCC to TIU cable. Now I can run my TMCC locomotives in command mode with my DCS remote. Great way to spend my Christmas money. But now I'll have to start upgrading my non command locomotives. Slippery slope this is.

I think that would be a browser issue. Some lock on a position, some dont. If it did but stopped, clear cache of browser, then try cookies too (log in again). An update might be doing it. Some OS-es are easier to deal with than others.

Changing the number of posts per page to twenty instead of 40 will help if your's doesn't do it .  That will also speed up some issues if you get a bum connection, like while trying to load a page full of a billion videos. (Then, even vi$eo just existing on a page badly slows a page's loading time now. Too many videos now means I cant see any pictures for an hour or two, even without watching them, all browsers .. pita) It changes back to 40 at times though.

Brian, Great photographs of Northern Pacific!

I had to clear the ROW under the tree Christmas Eve to make room for Santa to deliver the gifts. Since I'm still dealing with my cranky CW I changed out the consists to see if I could get better performance. I put the PE Berk on the short fast mail train and put my ATSF 0-6-0 on the PE run. Seems to work much better. Need to fix a loose wire in the Observation car too.

Looks good, Bob!  Acceptable running for the short time they will be running under the tree.

We never did much scenery. Once the tree base area was full of the best wrappings and premier gifts from "us" to "us" that was it.

 Santa would leave his stuff right in the way of life, marking a path to the "jackpot pile", often in another room.

  We began with stuff most in the way until we got there, Mom then slowed the show down, stopping the action. Clean up, then the train came on (if it wasnt wasnt already I know I got yelled at for running new trains before I opened all my gifts. Or maybe it was for running over Sis's new Barbie's dress, I'm not sure really .... then came Mom's choice distribution by asking "who is the red box for?"& "that one next"," hold on, let me change flash bulbs", etc.. Once that was done, breakfast and then  "us to us" presents last, sometimes in the evening, sometimes right away.

At the Grandparents, nearly the same thing. Some at the tree for looks, but most out of the way. (The non-train Grandfolk had an elaborate manger and fresh Christmas decorations always added to the "pro" doll house... so, "no room at the inn" there either )

Paul, things are really taking shape there and looking good! I sure hope you find the windows and doors or it going to looks a little funny just sitting up there! I guess you could always put a billboard on it! LOL Nice work!

Sorry Bob, so much to say and such a small brain I have! I love the little loop under the tree, sure are some nice looking trains you have there. I guess I am going to have to get some old cars for my 1 steam engine for next year!

Well now I've got 6 locomotives to upgrade to ERR. So more projects 😀.

I had to run home to load some wheels and tires in the truck for my wife to take to my brother to change ...  And my final pieces to the Christmas disconnect set are here!!!  WOO HOO.   Just had time to look at them in the box.  All seems well!   Will get them out and run them this evenings!!   YAY!

Tried experimenting with making some pine trees today.  

Technically, not all done today, but working on ballasting track over last week or so.  Mix of chick grit dyed with white and gray craft paint and some WS light gray ballast.

No worries Mike. The cars are all Lionel Polar Express coaches.
