Some of the "new" Lionel scale Berkshires are descended from the old K-Line molds. The B&A in green livery is such a model.

The K-Line Berkshires had a small motor amidships pointing forward. Even though they were beautiful models, the small motor limited their pulling power and longevity when consistently pulling a heavy load.

Has Lionel re-engineered the chassis to put a larger motor in the traditional rearward facing position, like all the other scale steam engines have been built for years?

Please let me know, if you know for CERTAIN, not just conjecture.  I would like to know before pulling the trigger on one of these new ones.

Thanks.

Please let me know, if you know for CERTAIN, not just conjecture. I asked this question when the last batch came out a few years back. Someone answered that they did have the bigger motors in the rearward facing position, but that person was just guessing and turned out to be WRONG.  I would like to know before pulling the trigger on one of these new ones.

Thanks.

Who said they were wrong?

I owned the original K LINE tooled B&A Legacy Berkshire 6-11389.  It most certainly had a large rearward facing can motor.

I had the shell off to address the usual smoke fan noise. The can motor barely fit in the shell taking up the rear half of it.

The $64,000 question " might" be. Will the larger motor interfere with the whistle steam feature which was not offered on the first run?

A email to Dave Olson might not hurt.

Fwiw. The Legacy light and heavy Mike's as well as the Legacy PRR K 4 all still use the K Line forward facing motor design. I've not seen any complaints as to pulling power or motor issues on these models
