I am trying to get track power from a ZW with 2 bricks(135w ea) through a TIU and terminal strips onto the track. I can't get power on the track. Do I go thru fixed or variable terminals on TIU? Does each TIU input need its own transformer? I a confused about wiring the TIU across each input to run variable.

Second part of question:  I have ground going from Legacy base to ZW only(U).  Do I need to have a ground going from Legacy base to track to?  this seems unnecessary since all ZW U is connected to track via terminal

You must power up Fixed 1 on the input side just to power up the the TIU. You must do this even if you just want outputs on the variable channels. Your other option is running an auxiliary power supply that plugs into the side of the TIU. These are available from Radio Shack and will power up all 4 channels. The jumpers from Fixed 1 is the cheapest route. All this is covered in the manual. For now just power up Fixed 1 and you should have 18v at your terminal strip and you should be able to run a MTH engine in DCS command. A good investment would be Barry's book as most of these scenarios are covered.

I also wanted the N&W J with the whistle steam but I bought it anyway. It is by far the best running, sounding and best looking J out there. it's a great engine.

Get used to legacy engines not having most of the steam effects according to Lionel reps at York . They will be on the vision line locomotives next year that will include two VL locomotives. One will be a smaller prototype.
