i have a #60 trolley, and a buddy has a #50 gang car. Both of these units seem to have the same problem. When they hit the bumper to go the other direction, they would both go a couple inches, then find themselves in neutral position. We both looked to see if there was a remedy but couldn’t find anything. Any ever have this problem?

you probably need to clean the reverse switch or replace it. you can hook up leads from a transformer and put the car upside down and then power it up. move the bumper switch your self while its up side down and make sure you push the bumper all the way in both direction. it should reverse make sure you push hard as if the switch is not throne all the way in both direction the motor will NOT run in either direction
That symptom is usually caused by too much pressure on the ground contact spring on the bumper slide. Try lightly bending up the contact spring to relieve a little downward pressure.
I'm curious if speed adjustments make any difference in the frenquency of the issue? What helps or hurts?
