Hi. I have an mth railking commodore Vanderbilt engine that runs, smokes, horn and whistle work but it doesn't make the chugging sounds nor do the breaks work. I've followed the instructions on trying to reset but it still doesn't work. I can get the coupler to work but no station sounds. Is there any other option/ Service? I'm not too tech savy so any help would be greatly appreciated.

reset 25 puts the chuff threshold on and off. reset 28 turns the PFA/FYS on and off. One bell signifies that the PFA is on.

You need a transformer with a Whistle and Bell button or at least the whistle button.
Place loco in the track and raise voltage to full. Then cycle throttle from full to about 12V and back to full. You will hear a ding. Do it 4 more times you will hear a clank. ding is 1 and clank=5 dings. So 2 clanks and a ding = 11. 5+5+1. Keep doing it until you get to the number you trying to adjust.

What's the catalog number? We should 1st check that it is in fact a PS-1 equipped locomotive.
But any PS-1 manual will give you the instructions you need. There are also videos online that should help you to know if you are doing it right. You know you have cycled the handle correctly when you hear a steam release sound on every cycle.
Guys isn't it feature 27 that's sets the chuff and that one is tricky even if you can find an manual with feature 27. anyone have a link for feature 27???
A feature 18 should restore to factory defaults but doesn't always fix the chuff. Need a charged battery to have both stick..
Like the manual you posted, using the 2nd feature 18 reset option it will reset the chuff rate (page 22). But the OP needs to check the manual of his locomotive, as not all the steamers had the changeable chuff rate like this. Some of the early ones you could only cycle through preset chuff rates instead of setting your own.
I don't believe you change the chuff rate with feature 27 either.It's is more of a fine tuning feature... Ex engine not chuffing at all or chuffing when standing still. My proto-1 days are long gone but remember messing with this feature . which engine?? can't remember

A quick search of MTH's site shows at least 2, 30-1133-0 and 30-1133-1. One is PS1, the other is not. What is the number on the box of your locomotive?
