Japan launches luxury Seven Stars train with $11,000 suite

This sightseeing service will wind its way through the southern island of Kyushu, stopping by huge volcanoes and relaxing hot springs.

It's a quick read, but looks nice.  Price is rather rich for my blood, but it'd be nice is something like this came State side.

Here it is the Seven Stars in Kyushu on video. It is diesel powered which is unusual in Japan where most trains are electric powered. This is a one-off, purpose built train. More info here. Its 1067mm (3ft6in) gauge which is the main operating gauge in Japan.

Another cruise train is the Twilight Express between Osaka and Sapporo.

There are still a few sleeper trains in Japan, including the Sunrise Express, a double deck EMU sleeper train built in the 1990s.  Not too long ago there were numerous "blue train" long distance sleeper trains but as Shinkansen high speed trains and airplanes have become more popular choices the blue trains have been discontinued.
