The Model Railroader's Guide to Diesel Locomotives (12437). Doesn't cover everything in great detail but very good overview and a great starter. What I liked about it has charts of when you would have expected to see specific models in service. New copies on ebay from $16

I have found A Field Guide to Trains by Gerald Foster to be an excellent source of info for identifying North American diesel and electric locomotives. Not a list, but a pocket guide that includes dates, specs, illustrations and a brief text on each loco model. Published in 1996.
