ERR Sound Commander 2 version numbers?

Have you tried contacting 3rd rail, who is the distributor of the boards?  I did check on the website and could not find any numbers with regard to the different sound boards they provide.

Are they actually Sound Commanders or Railsounds boards? I know they made a few Sound Commanders but not as many as you seem to have.

Pete, thanks - I can’t be 100% sure of anything, but the two labeled railsounds kits I have from that period are the 2-board “railsounds commander” RS4 boards. The boards I listed above all have identical form factor and pin out as the “Sound Commander 2” document still online at 3rd rail.

Probably the only way to know what they are hook them up to power and serial data.

If you have an engine that has been upgraded with a Cruise Commander it should have a 3 wire harness that goes to sound boards you can use.

Pete, thanks. I hooked them all up and tested them - I can obviously tell which are steam, etc, but I lack the experience to know which steam, or which diesel etc.. each is supposed to model.

maybe I’ll go through them again, and compare to whatever recordings, videos I can find on the web.

I was hoping somebody out there stashed a cheat sheet of version numbers…

I have never seen or heard of a listing of what was on these, my take is they were more "generic" sounds.  The only guy I can think of that might have some information would be Jon Z. @SantaFeFan, pretty sure he designed them many years ago for ERR.

I ran through them all again this morning, comparing them to the sound samples for the current ERR sound products, trying to match pitch and tone of horns and whistles. No exact matches, some seemed close, like cousins…

Two Sound Commanders were the Beep Commander and Buddy Commander. Pressing AUX1 2 with a Beep Commander gives a beep beep sound like the Road Runner makes. The Buddy Commander had a unique 5 chime horn.
