does it have a wireless tether? if so there could be an alignment issue. also if it has a cherry switch and a manual puffer smoke unit, there could be issues there also.

Chuff switch, wiring, or the tether if it's a wireless tether.  Do you have the Lionel product number for that set?

Does this Hudson have a fan driven smoke unit?  You need that to install the Super-Chuffer.

That one would accept the Super-Chuffer.  If you want four chuffs per/rev, you'd be replacing the chuff switch.  I was just working on a locomotive that the drawbar was riding up and cutting off the chuffs to the tender at times.

Has anyone done a 4 chuff by counting (maybe digitally) the rate and generating a chuff halfway between the last chuff and the next? On the fly changing with the rate, eh?

The Super-Chuffer should install in this one without any special issues.

Frank Timko has conversions for many AC motored locomotives, I would not be surprised if he has the motor kit for this one.  Take a look at TIMKO REPAIR DEPOT and contact them to see if they have the mount for this model.  If you convert to a can motor, you can then install an ERR Cruise Commander M motor driver to give you great low speed performance.

This was brought up when I was doing the Super-Chuffer development.  I tinkered with it, but it's far from simple, as the speed changes you have to dynamically adjust the timing.  I was always a bit behind so that anytime the speed was changing, you could really hear the uneven chuff.  I couldn't get a decent sound, so I abandoned it.  At a steady speed it was OK.

I also considered a simple encoder on the flywheel to generate them that way, but with all the different gear ratios, I just couldn't see the ROI for all the development.

I'll be there on and off.  I'll be in early to setup the Super-Chuffer and lighting.  I'm also bringing some remote controlled sound modules, though I don't have the final version finished yet.  Even the prototypes are pretty cool...
