Ho hum... Another MTH catalog and another round of regurgitating familiar models with different paint schemes and/or reissues in PS3. Electronics.

The glass is always half empty for some.

And completely empty for many. MTH and Lionel have saved me a ton of money the last few years. Yeah, I know why; that doesn't make me buy what I don't want, or already have in an "old-fashioned" version.

But, these days, if 'ya like flags....

I'd kinda have to agree. I don't have a massive collection of locomotives (11 total). I only buy Santa Fe or Southern Pacific locomotives. Neither Lionel or MTH has made a scale model of a locomotive from either of those roads that I would buy recently (i.e. a Southern Pacific Mikado or 2-10-2) so I'm saving money. I don't expect to see any new tooled diecast steam locomotives from either of them any time soon either, so I'll just continue to occasionally preorder some rolling stock. At least there we get some new stuff, well at least paint wise.

Oh Boy, another Big Boy, Really.  I see a ton of pre-orders there.  I would be really surprised.  But.....

I hope they do a better job with the sound file than the 2017 Premier Big Boy, that whistle sounds like a wounded cow, and certainly nothing like the real Big Boy whistle!

It's Western Maryland 734's whistle from 2006.

Lionel vision big boy was also not a big boy whistle. Let’s not get too technical it’s just a toy

The Vision Line Big Boy whistle is much closer to the prototype that the MTH Big Boy whistle.  The MTH I have doesn't even sound like a train whistle.

Let’s get technical it’s a $2,000 toy!  I want my expensive toys to have better quality, you're free to accept whatever they dish out.

“ Big boys with Big Boys discussing big toys”.  Sorry I couldn’t help myself

Either way, I'm still excited for it.

I agree with you Peter - it’s interesting to see what direction MTH will be going and there’s always one or 2 surprises in these catalogs. I presume they will be released online Wednesday morning and the corresponding Notch6 podcast with the catalog review and interview with MTH’s Andy Edleman will drop about the same time.

Hoping for a LIRR RS1 in dgle (or is it black?).

dgle? Mth has not yet done rs1’s in These schemes. I would order 1 of eachA94B093B-80D7-47EC-B5EF-D065CEA299C988B56664-0C98-4E2D-B98B-2575A4F87D9F

I’ll take a Tichy!

Just want one like this for some reason

Ah yeah, Based on the photo from www.trainsarefun.com I would say black is the correct color. The pilots were also painted white at some point to make the engines more visible at RR crossings. I would take the rs1 &  a LIRR Alco  S2 painted in black with 67B964C6-A329-4E9F-AA7E-C3AD71D5A89Dwhite pilots.

I am in for a Tichy as well

RS-1s probably had the greatest variety of paint schemes starting with the as Delivered in PRR colors, the As delivered and repaint Tichy colors, Goodfellow gray and orange, the sweep grey and orange and the MTA colors.

The white pilots were done on the S-1 and S-2 switchers. The Black or Brunswick RS-1s were only in these colors for a short time, several months when the Bankruptcy Trustee's vision resulted in redoing these into the Tichy colors within months of their delivery. Not sure if Railroads shops actually had white pilots on the RS-1s

Good info. I didn’t know the black/ Brunswick scheme was so short lived for the RS1. I’m hoping for any LIRR diesel in any scheme other then goodfellas or sweep grey & orange. I love those schemes but they have been done & re-done a lot. PRR scheme, Tichy, or MTA blue/ yellow will get my order.

So would some as delivered green R21 subway cars.

I can't help but feel blessed to have the variety and realism of today's O gauge models available.  I too want them to be as realistic as possible, but we have come so far that I am grateful.  It enables me to be very selective in what I am willing to purchase and that is a good thing.

It has always been a thrill for me to see what is in the new catalogs and it still is.  When there isn't anything I want in one, it just saves me money.

Yes sir, we definitely need a Tichy color RS-1 from MTH.

Interestingly, the S-1 and S-2 class switchers were delivered in the PRR colors . These locos wore these colors for a long time, up into the late 1950s before repaint into GoodFellow colors. Some of these had wjite pilots. The S-2 1000HP switchers spent much time on Road Feights.

Here ya go kids:

I see the CSX Police, Fire and Armed forces units in both Premier and Railking, along with the UP 1111 “Powered by (the tears of) Our People”

Strasburg wooden coaches are back along with the NS IC heritage unit. The Jupiter and Central Pacific 119 Premier 4-4-0s are the first newly produced premier steam we’ve seen in a while.

No Christmas light cars at all - thats odd considering what a hit those were, I really thought MTH had lightening in a bottle there. Maybe there were too many repairs and it wasn’t worth it - the wires tended to break real easily if the car was grabbed by the side.

I seem to recall MTH running Premire 119's and Jupiter's a few years ago.  Either way, they're not newly produced locomotives, just reworked NYC 999's.

I didn’t say newly tooled - I said newly produced, meaning they are actually being made for this catalog, and not engines from a production run 3 or 4 years ago with the leftovers still sitting in the warehouse. If you look at the last 6 or so MTH catalogs all the Premier steam has been just what they have in stock leftover from previous runs. I think the SP Daylight GS4 (the production run with Christmas lights) was the last premier steam engine actually made in the last 3 or so years, I think.

After quickly skimming the new catalog I think there's a lot of colorful offerings.  Looks like some new (fact & fantasy) roadnames.  I'm liking the Railking: Christmas/North Pole Holiday Light passenger car sets, the Reading & Rock Island Alco RS-3's, Rock Island E-8s, the FM H10-44's have that "let me look at that again" vibe.  Some cool and tongue in cheek military stuff.

Premier line has reissues and new 64ft woodside passenger sets.  More military flats w/ loads ($$$) and IMHO the always cool looking european offerings that all seem to be 0-54 or greater minimums which generally means for it to look OK as it runs, it should be at least the next step up or more.  My layout's outer line is 0-54 so I'll just admire these from afar (youtube).

Prices are up, but that's been the norm for all and might also be a hedge against possible tariffs and/or currency fluctuations.  There's nothing that "I GOT TO HAVE", but I'll take a longer look and possibly order or buy one or two things depending on what my budget allows.  Then again, the extra time might provide me the ability to ask "do I really need or want this?" and eventually talk myself out of buying.
