I'm not a fan of Fastrack, but I am a member of a couple other Yahoo groups. The ATCS Monitor group has been filling my email for the last two days with this panicked talk. People have been suggesting a move to groups io for over a year now.

The problem is it's not a free service. ATCS members have no problem coming up with the money, because it is a valuable service to railfans. Members are volunteering right and left, to chip in to cover the fee. My other groups have been totally quiet on this situation.

I think the problem is mostly related to file sharing. I have no idea how important that aspect is to the Fastrack group, but it is at the heart of ATCS, which allows members to download railroad monitoring kits, so members can see where trains are in real time.

UPDATE:

I just found this in my email.

The premium membership is only required to automatically migrate the entire group to io Groups. You can do it for free (as I did for a couple of my groups this week by doing the following:

1) Create the group at io Groups
2) Export the Yahoo Group emails and delete all the info other than the email addresses, then copy/paste them into the Invite field of io Groups. Each will receive an invite from io Groups and if they accept no further action is needed.
3) Download any of the files you want restored from Yahoo into a folder. Select and drag/drop them into the field at io Groups.
