The Weaver/MTH models are actually an SD40-2, not an SD40.   The prototype SD40 is about 3 feet shorter, and as such the SD40 doesn't have a long front and rear platform or "porch" as the SD40-2, which is the biggest spotting difference.  The reason the SD40-2 was longer was because of a new truck design (HT-C) that resulted in a longer wheelbase than the older Flexicoils.  The other spotting difference is that there is a water level sight glass on the engineer's side rear hood of the SD40-2 that the SD40 didn't have.   Their dynamic brake blisters are also slightly different.

I have been looking and comparing But it looks like to me not only the MTH SD40-2, but the RS11, ALCO 630/628, UB28b, RSD12 and some others were originally from weaver but with additional detailing . That would make the weavers comparable to the pre 2000 MTH premier line and current RK Scale engines. Is there anybody out there that could provide more info.
