Front End Friday

Well here it is Friday already.  Its a very stormy Friday here in Central Texas and we have had very high winds / rain all night.  So I have reached back into the archive for today's post.  It's the Lionel post war # 2032 Erie Alco FA AA units from 1952-1954.  I never had these as a boy, acquired this pair much later in the 1980's.  Interesting and a bit odd as we lived relatively close to the Erie - Lackawanna railroad.  However this pair still strikes a handsome pose on my little RR.

The GG-1 is my favorite electric also. I rode behind them for many years, since I was 3 years old in 1954 through the GG-1's retirement. Below is my contribution to the photo chain.

The Great Northeastern Railway's (GNR) 2-8-4 steam locomotive just out of the paint shop and proudly wearing the GNR logo on its tender. It is now ready to pull the GNR flagship, luxury passenger train to be named for the GNR's former "Chairman of the Bored", the late Chaz Harrison (photo below).

When the passenger coaches are gathered, painted and decaled, the train will be named "The Chazanooga Choo Choo".  Below is a link to a video of the new locomotive.

I never got the chance to ride behind the GG-1, but I did get the chance to sit in the cab when they were waiting to be scraped. It was very cramped and uncomfortable. I can’t imagine how the engineers did it . Here is the train that I rode to work.

Though I never got a GG-1 cab ride, while my grandfather could still get around, he took me to the PRR Orangeville roundhouse, his home base while he was still working for the PRR as a freight conductor. There was a GG-1 sitting on a track. My grandfather talked to one of his friends who climbed into the cab and they lifted me up to get in and see it. I FULLY agree with you. The GG-1 cab does not have a lot of room. It was quite cramped.

At the tail end, the Chessie caboose is by K-Line.

Here is a bit of "F.E.F." size comparison for you.  The American Flyer 4644 Wide Gauge box cab from the 1930's and the American Flyer O gauge steeple cab #1211 electric from the 1920's.  Two great "front ends" and they both still run and can pull trains, although I really no longer have any room for the wide gauge to operate any more.

Happy FEF everyone!  Here's the front end of NYS&W "Susquehanna" GP40 #3040.  This is a Premier 2-rail model from MTH with fixed pilots and full-length handrails.  I added a ProtoCraft scale coupler (to the front-end only) to add a bit more prototypical realism.  With the exception of the stamped metal representation of a "drop-step" in the down position (which I will eventually remove and replace with a prototypical one), this is a great-looking model IMO.
