How to fix Trolley Pole (AC motor) binding during direction change

I'm sure this was solved years ago (but I don't know the solution!) but I have a Lionel San Francisco trolley with the AC style motor that runs great but for the trolley pole which randomly (but routinely) will bind up during the direction change. Everything looks fine (pole, gears, bumper slide teeth, etc.. and it is lubed so I'm not sure what to try next...

Ideas? Prior discovered "fix" I can apply?
