Lionel 2015 Volume 1 Predictions

I'll put my money on the square that says they have developed a 3D printing method to make passenger cars to eliminate the problems they have had with overseas suppliers producing product. 

 

Won't be extruded aluminum, but maybe it's a viable solution.

L3 would probely require all new tooling .. 

I predict that they will once again not be able to produce the Modern 50' Boxcar and the Exterior-braced 50' Double-door Boxcars with the new roller bearing trucks and swinging couplers.

Is the BIG news about the passengers cars going to be production in the USA of the passenger cars along with new tooling? Is there any postwar items in this upcoming catalog?

Lionel FINALLY produces 2 rail Legacy models I wish...

Well, let's see now... according to those who've been told but are playing coy with teasers right now... the key phrase was "many will be surprised", which could mean anything.   

 

Certainly USA production would be very surprising -- but extremely welcome -- in this day and age, as many thought we'd never see this again in our lifetime.  But quite frankly, Lionel's overseas aluminum car production has been a DISASTER over the past few years.  And the program in general has been floundering aimlessly without direction since passenger car rolling stock delivered in the 2005-2010 timeframe.

 

So as surprising as it would seem to most folks, we could also argue that the current approach has just been too PAINFUL to continue unchanged.  Enter a USA supplier as the knight in shining armor!!!    Certainly not out of the question. 

 

OTOH, Scott Mann seems to be able to crank out impressive passenger car products in record-breaking time.  So perhaps the "Big News" is Lionel will be partnering with 3rd Rail / GGD to oversee/produce all Lionel-branded passenger cars going forward!!!    Now THAT would certainly "surprise" a lot of people -- not so much that it doesn't make sense, but rather it's just not something anyone had on their radar screen.  Who knows... anything is possible. 

 

There are an ENDLESS number of "surprise scenarios" that could happen.  That's why these things are best left completely hush-hush until ultimately announced.  Even a seemingly innocent comment generates a fuss of unnecessary energy.  Fortunately, we only have a few days before the so-called "Big News" is unveiled.

The Class A would certainly complete the famous N&W trio of the J, Y6b and Class A in Legacy.     

 

And let's not forget, the 611J wasn't the big hold-up here.  It was the passenger cars.  In fact, the one thing Lionel has had NO PROBLEM churning out is locomotives (both steam and diesel).  So Lionel could likely deliver a Legacy Class A in a heartbeat if that's what they selected to offer.  Count on it.

Wasn't the aluminum passenger car body one of the first things Lionel had shipped in from the Orient, way back when?

The Class A was part of the "Lawsuitgate" of years ago. It is one loco that hasn't been reproduced since.

My question is, did Lionel retain the molds for the Class A or would they have to have new molds made?

I do not believe that Lionel will be coming out with anything requiring new tooling investment, but rather offer some new road names on existing models with a large expansion of the LionChief + offering on diesels. Lot's of nice guesses here and we will see shortly.

For me I would like more scale cars never offered before. There are not too many engines I would jump at. One though would be that K-line Tank engine in B&A markings which brings me to my question. Everyone is mentioning product from the old K-line. I thought someone else got all the tooling which Lionel does not have access to......Paul

I would really like to see some of the old K-Line tooling, specifically some new 21" aluminum passenger cars.  I want to add more 21" cars to my already 11-car Empire State Express set.

Not true! There are a number of new tooled items including a diesel. Pictures, details and prices up on our web site Monday at 9 am.

How about a Pennsy EP5 and a fully skirted and streamlined Pennsy T1 (the 'other one' whose number escapes me just now).

I would like to see some station sound diner cars for the Blue Comet, Alton, and The Southern Crescent.  Its been a few years since these sets came out and still no station sound diner cars that match.

 

I would also like to see more freight sound cars released for individual purchase rather than having to by a 3 pack.

 

Lastly, I would like to see numbered turnouts added to the fastrack lineup.

Yeah, the Dreyfuss Hudson & a Legacy PE Diesel would definitely put a pinch on my wallet this year....

If you add additional cars, you will have to change to diesel power, i.e. E7 units. The ESE Hudsons had a difficult time maintaining the tight schedule with more than 9 or 10 cars.

Absolutely! So long as it isn't the same road number previously offered by MTH, Lionel, and Sunset/3rd Rail.
