I just obtained a nice (very nice) Lionel 2340 Northern Pacific Diesel. After a little clean-up and lube - it runs like a champ - reverse and forward and the horn works fine.  Condition is very good.  I get a pretty loud buzzing sound. I read that this sound can come from the solenoid and to disable to e-unit and the sound goes away - which it did.   Also, when the shell is off, I don't get the sound - maybe the shell echos or vibrates in some manner.

Anyway, I am just asking if others can confirm this noise and that nothing really can be done to eliminate the noise.

Thanks.

Ron

Guys

I haven't used this site (or others) much for asking questions, but everyone sure is willing to help and with very good information.

Just this last note...the shell is more narrow which can amplify the sound.  That makes sense...thanks.

Dave... what is a full bridge rectifier and where can I buy one?  As you can tell, I am not that experienced in repairing trains (or electrics) but I get a kick out of working on these trains - but I keep it to mostly minor repairs.   So, I don't really know what that rectifier is and/or how to find one.

Thanks

Ron

Ron,

You may already be aware that the Lionel Postwar 2349 Northern Pacific is one of the most desirable Postwar Geeps.

I don't think installing a bridge rectifier will hurt its interest to a collector, so long as you don't drill any holes to install it. Any wiring modification could easily be reversed.

Just thought I'd mention this.

Of course the engine is yours to do with as you see fit.
