Most of the images (including from the catalog ) I have seen of the Lionel Polar Express engine show the crosshead and guide bent or slanted up to some degree. Some more so than others.
Is there a reason for this?

What Polar Express are you talking about.... traditional or scale? Current production or past products.
"Traditional"or Jr. Berkshire size. Several different production runs from what I can tell - coventional, LC, LC+, and per the 2019 catalog LC 2.0.
I noticed the concern on several listed on eBay, and assumed the issues were cosmetic damage.
Looking at the new 2019 catalog, the image contained exhibits the same issue.
Further research, it seems most if not all have this issue to some degree.
