I wanted an HO set, but my father insisted to get a Lionel.
Altought I played a lot with the train set mostly made from plastic, it still in very good shape.

I tought about selling it a couple of time but the nostalgic factor made me kept it so far.

Wow, I did some horse trading with a fellow LGB collector for that very same set, good condition with box just this week....I think I have about $20 in the set.

A mutual friend and I got to talking, an HO RTR set from 1973 or this set....which has a better shot of existing in operating condition today?
I was not in the hobby until 1995 and shortly thereafter I acquired a Lionel Santa Fe work train sss set #1632, produced by Lionel in 1986. I have it packed away except the loco and tender are on my mantel. It was a fun start to the hobby. The crane car is cool and the bunk car and tool car were somewhat unique. There is a set on ebay with photos.

Back to MPC and LTI train sets.

Heres one pretty LTI steam from the beautiful C&O set made in the mid nineties..
Hard to believe this last LTI steamer is already 15 years old.. The very first with TMCC and RS-2. A nice engine in its time, this one has entered static display status as one of the last American made shelfqueens.
Amazing to see and hear how far detailing and sound quality has come over the years..

Lionel MPC era trains were more basic that what we have today but as they moved in the Kuhn era they became more detailed. I run MPC engines and 90's stuff on my layout. An MPC NYC F3 engine with two pullmor motors, an old fashioned electro-mechanical e-unit and with an added MRC sounder board pulls a set of eight aluminum NYC passenger cars up and down hills without problems and runs great. The American made trains of this era are like Timex watches. "They take a lickin and keep on tickin".
I'm going to finish off this thread with my end of year project....putting out my 6464 boxcar remakes from the 90s. I loved it when Lionel did this. I always treasured the PostWar 6464 cars, but couldn't see paying those early 90s prices for them. The last set was catologed in 2000 and delivered in 2000-01. This weekend I hung shelving. Most of these cars had never been out of the box until this past Friday night.

I am going to copy and save this thread. The pics and the trip down "memory lane" has been fantastic! Thanks to all!

Joe.....I'm speaking figuratively. This thread was seemingly loosing a little interest. As I continue to unpack my collection from my attic (been packed away since Fall 03), I will continue to add pictures. Opening up boxes that have been packed away for 8+ years is like unpacking something new. In addition, it stirs lots of memories from when my son was a youngster and was my buddy in the train room and accompanied me to York.

Here's a pic from that time....and with the Modern Era Conrail Unit train too!

I certainly will try to keep it going with relavent stuff from this era.
