I won't be surprised to see the FEF with whistle steam in the future-or a vision line offering, but who knows?  Honestly, I hope it isn't in Vol II because the budget was tough last year on UP steam!

Great video!  Love the FEFs!

Thanks for the comment!  It really is incredible, I was shocked by both the incredible sounds as well as the size of the locomotive!  It's a great addition to my UP fleet!

Hahah, I hear ya on the VL offering...that would be both amazing and awful on my wallet!!

Not sure why it's rotated but you get the point.

These are great books.  I wish I could find some at a reasonable price.  I'd probably buy the whole series if I could.  However, everytime I come across them online it seems like they want a fortune for them.  Clearly they are popular for a reason.

FEF-1s had unique tenders compared to the later FEF-2/3's centipede tender. There is a lot of work in these photos-about 40 hrs.  It's all brass and detail parts/trucks come from PSC.  I quickly threw some old decals on it because I was so excited.  I've removed them since this picture and have installed new.  Here's a teaser:

Those tenders really add to the unique look of the FEF-1. When it is finished it should fit right in next to your 3rd Rail early Challengers.

I'm sure you are aware of and already use steamlocomotive.com as a resource.

here's a few links from that site to FEF-1 photos:

Another great resource I visit frequently is the Denver Public Library photo file. There are two search fields.  Be sure to use the "Search Photographs" field. I enter the locomotive I'm looking for ("Union Pacific 4-6-2, 4-8-2, 2-10-2" etc.). It will pull up tons of photos of that type and photos are listed by the year it was taken. It is really helpful for researching modifications and livery schemes by period.  I keep this link as a desktop icon because I use it the most:

I did a little research several years ago.  I was surprised when I found the photo because outside of 2906 and 7002 I didn't think the UP streamlined.

Discussions on this forum were interesting but after I emailed out to the guys at Utahrails.net they did a little research and got back to me.  The semi-streamlining was briefly mentioned in a book or two I guess that the UP shop did it themselves after seeing what the SP was doing but found in testing it had no effect on the smoke draft towards the cab. The wind wings on the other hand were much more successful.

And also, thanks for the books link.  I've been to the UP site but never thought to look for the books there.  Silly oversight.

Will.

I had some spare time today and spent a lot of it looking at the site you provided. Though I looked at it the other night, today I was able to really use some of the different functions.  It's a great resource (just as you said!).  I really like being able to search by years.  I've never saw most of the photos and saved a lot of them.

If anyone has photos of an FEF-1 cab interior or cab area, let me know.

Again, thanks for the excellent link.  I'll be using it in the future.

Yes.  I especially like the fact that they are digitally saved as super high quality photos that allow for zooming in for close-up detail.  The library did a great job.  I'm always careful, though, to provide either a direct link to the photos or else give proper credit to the library and photographer's collection for rights sake.  Somebody worked quite thoughtfully on those.

Even though I'm usually searching for locomotives in the rest of the picture there's usually a good representation of passenger, freight, or mixed consists of the period.

Also since were talking about a photo album I don't feel bad adding another post without attaching a photo of my own.   So here's an old one of my previous layout.  UP Fast Freight set Berkshire Jr. and Lionmaster 6-11200 in the foreground.

I know more of you out there have UP stuff to show/share.  Let's see those photos!

Happy Weekend fellow UP fanatics!!

Wanted to share two videos with you guys.  The first is just some good old running action courtesy of my UP fleet!  The second is for any Vision Line Big Boy owner that has experienced poor performance with the unit's blow-down effect.   A good friend of mine, Bill Yates put out a great four-part series in which he went through various trouble-shooting techniques in an effort to improve the smoke unit's performance.  Thought it would be worthwhile to share!

Hope you guys enjoy!!

In other news, I bought 2 future project locomotives today.

I spent most of the night carefully installing/checking my ERR install into the FEF. I'm electrically challenged.  I'm proud of myself-it works! Now need to permanently solder/heat shrink the connections.

Basically, I built the tender as an oil burner.  Then plans changed to coal.  When removing the oil "deck," I got it too hot and the whole front of the tender fell apart. That was quickly followed by nasty words my wife doesn't like to hear....and 3 hrs of soldering.

Since I had to solder the whole front back together, I took advantage of the situation.  Drilled holes for the ERR speaker as seen here.

IMG_6762

Below:  Drilled a hole for the tether to pass through.  While at the hardware store, I grabbed the plastic grommet, which the tether wires will pass through into the tender/ERR board.  The grommet will prevent wire chafing.  It presses into the hole.  The masking tape are labels so I can keep everything straight...

IMG_6769

Below, grommet piece soldered into tender.

IMG_6772

Below: Coal load rough shaped in foam.  Will be painted black and 'coal' glued to it.  ERR TMCC antenna will mount to foam.

IMG_6764

Below:  New problem-foam falls through tender opening.

IMG_6773

Below:  I soldered in brass pieces to form a ledge for the foam to sit on.

IMG_6775

Below, underside view.  No laughing at my soldering skills, I'm getting better but it's harder than it looks!  Especially when things are hard to reach and I don't have a 3rd hand!

IMG_6776

My original plan was to put the smoke and run/PGM switch in the water hatches.  They were to big.  So, I came up with this:

IMG_6778

The finished switches are hidden by the coal load and easily accessible:

IMG_6777

As if my first ERR install wasn't intimidating enough, it was complicated by 2 rail trucks, and adding a common to the frame.  But, it works well now!

IMG_6755

Still have to solve a few puzzles to have smoke.  Need to make a bracket and decide how I'm going to connect the unit to the stack...I'm missing something, not sure what.  But, I can't do anything until a smoke stack arrives.  Should be here this week.

I can't begin to describe the amount of time it takes to do some of this stuff.  I'm sure I'll be faster on the next one.

No work on the FEF tomorrow, I'll be at Indy 500 qualifying... I hope to get the sound installed this week.

After a major set back, it's starting to come together and I'm excited. I can't wait for the PSC parts to arrive so I can get back to work on the boiler.

More to come!

Heard rumors the VL reefers may be here soon.

Looks great bud!  Very impressive work.

Wow, that's a hard one to find.  Congrats.

I never thought when these were introduced they'd command the prices we see now.  Seems everybody 'had' to get one recently.  And, why not?  It's a popular UP model, unique construction and the Scout lover's found their collectability undeniable.

As Will said, it's a great feeling to finally add an item you've wanted for a while.  Again, congrats on your new purchase and enjoy it.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks bud!  Yup hard to find and super expensive, but it's a piece I've really wanted, so in my eyes, worth the $$.  As I lamented to Will, I just wish I had the foresight to purchase these when they first came out....talk about price appreciation huh?? lol

My personal take is the BSA will probably go down as even more desirable than the GEVO demonstrator....there is one on the bay now for north of 2K....crazy!

Glad you enjoyed the video!

Did someone say "Union Pacific?"  Just found this thread tonight, really glad I have.

I know what I have is all 3 rail, and have some from Lionel, MTH, Weaver, 3rd Rail, Atlas, etc.  Not showing all... Madison and streamline pass sets, Lionel Postwar, K Line E8s, etc.  The Big Boy is an MTH from 1999, but I have upgraded to TMCC/RS from ERR, and glad I did!  Also, the FEF from Weaver came with QSI, but now I have installed ERR systems TMCC/RS.

Great new pics gentlemen.  Erik, absolutely beautiful cars!  I also know at least one other person that thinks that FEF-1 is as great as I do.  Bob, Nice FEF-3.  Texas, great UP collection.  What's that other stuff?  I do like the Lionel 622.  I have my Dad's 623 in perfect shape.

Keep em coming....

WITZ 41,

You have gotten me thinking about my Weaver FEF and other than the ERR upgrades,

making other cosmetic improvements.  Please send me, and for others, the addy for

PSC as I am not up-to-snuff on all the suppliers.  I just recently retired from being out-of-state all the time and playing catch up with my layout.  Yes, always liked the Lionel PW 622, and 6220, and the 4 623s I have.  All total, I have over 200 pcs motive power, pretty much split 50/50 between postwar and modern.  The effort to have ALL my collection out of boxes is the problem I now face.  Have shelves on the wall, but that impedes my room for expansion onto around the wall track right-of-way.  Never enough room, is there?  Seeing the pics of the H7 have really got me to thinking....a dangerous thing...LOL!!!

God bless those we remember on this date and those protecting us still.... abroad and here at home, from all threats, foreign and domestic.

Jesse

Yes, it was the pics you posted of the H7 that wet my whistle.  And the upgrades to the Weaver FEF have me thinking about the one I have, detailing and upgrades to the exterior/cab.  Really like the UP Y3.  My Lionel St Fe Y3 #1795 is an excellent runner and has no problem pulling the 21" K Line CZ 12 car consist, or, I have also pulled my 18" MTH UP streamline 13 car consist on the grades pictured of my layout.  I am waiting to do any landscaping/scenic until I have run all my engines, pulling the longest cars I have in long consists and certain all trackage is final.  The Century Club II Niagara has given me the most fits running, but have gotten the bugs out of it and adjusted track as needed.  Really like the changes to the FEF and awaiting the final results. Let me know what you acquire from PSC, please, as I may wish to upgrade mine.
