A friend called and asked about a PS 1 unit. I have a manual but no info on what two clinks or two clanks means. I don't have the unit, but I know it's not the three clanks of death. The battery in the unit was a regular 9 volt. not an MTH or a rechargeable battery.

As long as battery was good, that can be used for testing. Hard to say. So he powers it up to 10-12 Volts and it starts up and makes two clanks? Any other sounds like idle or such? Or is it silent other then the 2 clanks, or dings?
If it goes silent, that could be the ID conflict and the engine shuts down because it believes it needs to be told to start up, which only QSI engines could do. It is a software conflict where an ID bit is set, but MTH software did not allow it to be cleared or used.
What happens when he raises and lowers voltage as if trying to move up the reset sequence. Can he get past Reset position 1? G
Read proto 1 start up procedures. if you go over 10 volts on start up, you get the 2 clanks.
Let the engine sit for 10 minutes with no voltage. power up going to about 9 volts. let the start up sounds play. hit the direction button. the engine should go forward. if this does not work, try a factory reset.
Thank You both. As I suspected, it was operator error (lack of knowledge of PS 1, including me!) or his tranny voltage was a little high. Unit works just fine after I suggested turning the voltage down a bit on his start up, wait a bit then use the direction function. All good! No reset needed. I did tell him to get a MTH battery, or the like, in the unit for regular usage.
