With the green and other LED project, I was also experimenting with something else. Running the layout with low background lighting, say at night. NEAT! The great idea is that one does not have to have stuff on the layout exacly right. The "enought" principle of the old HO V&O. "Pratically Perfect" as Marry Poppins would say.

Keeping you transformers visible lets you "kill the house lights" 100% for the "show".
I use TMCC in Con. But I do keep a light in the ransformer area because of Murphy!
BTW, my lights are an a PowerMaser/PowerHouse set, so I can set the lights for the mood!
Was down in the basement for something else this week and powered the Layout to top off the batteries in everything. LEft it running as I went back up and came back down with the lights off.
Noticed and said to myself "HEY! Look at the town lights ! Gotta do this again for spectators."
Downside: Now I must add 3 way switching to the basement lights so I can control it from the layout. Hmmmm, might just add a separate set that is more aligned with the layout to start with.
I am currently working on getting my layout ready for night operations as well. My yard is right next to my transformers, and I keep a Lionel 92 floodlight tower in between the two, ready to light up in case of an emergency.
