I got this chassis for a project knowing it need a motor, just want to double check, I'm assuming it would use an RS385 but I realize there are a few variations and this one looks like it may have bearings on either side of the worm gear so I'm curious and the MTH parts identifier isn't much help for this particular loco.

MTH 999 chassis

Also, it looks like this is scale driver version, which he large 86" wheels which is what I wanted.  Wheels turn free so that's good, it was just  cannablized for parts to fix other locos by a hobby shop.

Dennis, did you get that chassis from Perry’s?....if so, I held that very chassis in my hands......I met up with Pete (Norton) and Perry let us rummage through his stuff! ...small world if it is!.........Pat

Dennis, interesting is an understatement .....you can’t fathom the amount of stuff they have....there’s so much to see you cant wrap your head around it....we were digging for what seems like hours! .....this was only about a few weeks ago....I remember distinctly Perry handing me that chassis.....and I passed on it....Pete commented “hey wow that’s from a 999” ....Pete got a few goodies, I filled my trunk! .....high light of my finds...4 Premier Dreyfuss Hudsons....mostly intact!....it was a great time! ....Perry was most hospitable we dug like dogs looking for bones!............Pat

As Pat says Perry's is quite a place. As for 999 this would be the PS2 version (20-3207-1) if it has a tether. Both versions have scale wheels. 999 was built with the larger diameter drivers for speed but later had smaller (70"???) for better starting and heavier cars. MTH did both early and late versions in PS2 and later in PS3. I have one of each but will have try and dig them out if I can find them. Too much stuff.

FYI Perry's is a little over an hour from the York Fairgrounds taking the most direct route, no interstates, through some nice countryside. Take your sports car if you have one.

Believe it or not I think that used the smaller 365 motor with FW no worm.  The Worm was a separate part. So you had a small dogbone too.  G

I think you are correct, I found some references via pictures of other engine's with a similar separate worm and coupling or dogbone.  With that  I could probably fab a motor mount and then couple to the worm shaft.  I also wondered, you may be right that it could be a smaller motor due to the limited size in that firebox.  Will have to see what I can come up with.  Thanks for the thoughts!
