I had not run this engine (#5344) for several months.  But it started up in Legacy mode o.k. and ran for a bit before coming to a halt.  At that point the bell started ringing and nothing I tried would stop it.  So, I followed reprogramming instructions, but that had no effect on it.  Also, it would not run in conventional mode.  No lights on engine.  Nothing but continuous bell ringing.  While the engine was under warranty, it displayed the "blinking cab light of death".  Sent it to Lionel and was fixed.  Now I have this problem.  Has anyone had this problem, or know what the problem is?

Bill Hudson....
I have a Milwaukee Rd 261 same deal try this.
If you have another legacy engine put the tender from Hudson behind it if powered up and all sounds are quiet it's the engine that has the issue.
I ordered a new ir sensor but haven't been able to install and see if issue is resolved.
In my case the current ir sensor wires were melted together.
Hope this helps you diagnose your issue.

Bill,

1) try a different section of track.

2) Try cleaning track and rollers.

3) Change outlets

4) try reset less than three times and then shut off track power.

5) try just the tender on the track and hit Aux 1 + 5

Then power down. Add loco to tender and restart.

i KNOW these suggestions sound like Voo doo but each has worked for me.

okay will try a second attempt to help.

in original post I stated my S-3 did exact same thing and it was sent back to Lionel they replaced the main board in locomotive part # 691RCMC091 receiver/driver board.

Marty Fitzhenry says these boards are very good and I can say the second one is. I have a post going about S-3 Lionel Update read it for what cured its issue am sure gunrunner john will be amazed I know I was!!

To all,  thanks for the suggestions.  I'll give them a try perhaps late next week, as we'll have out-of-town visitors for the next three days.  Too bad the VL Hudson will not be operational to show them.  The Hudson is the latest technology engine I own.  Oh well, something else will go wrong while running the layout for them.  My experience has been almost 100% failure of some type when running for visitors.

I'll post results soon.
