I have a 435 that runs but the armature sparks dramatically on the side opposite the commutator. It looks like some of the coating on the winding has come off. Is there any remedy to this other than rewinding the armature?

First you need to stop the rubbing. I believe that there is likely a spacer missing on the pinion side that would stop it.
