This a model of the Martian War Machine from the 1953 movie "War of the worlds with light kit. There are 2 smaller models next to the drug store (hard to see). Thought I'd add a little Sci-Fi to my small layout. Don't worry the military is mobilizing to thwart the invasion. Will they succede? Does mankind prevail? Do we have a secret weapon?  Anyone else have a Sci-Fi scene on your layout?

They visited the CNY Railroad too.

First contact was made at the site of the old gold mine:

They seemed friendly and were quick to greet the local inhabitants as their Arcturus Special glided through town.

They may have made a mistake though when they invited "the boys" on board. They said something about wanting to learn new games like that "poker" they had heard so much about. Hope the gang leaves the friendly Martians with at least enough to make it home.

Oh yea thats the best verson the 1953 movie. There was a t.v. show that picked up where the movie left off.I have always liked seeing the war machine fire there deathray.I have thought of geting myself a model of 1.You can get them with lights light up.Hey has any body seen silvana. Will they destory your town or maybe. They are just loooking for a parking space.Martian stick head out of the war machine."You people have no idea how hard it is to park one of things."

Did something similar at the Chicagoland Lionel Railroad Club. Had the Martian War Machine parked in the lot with the cars while we played the War of the Worlds on the Drive In screen. It was a big hit.

Hung a wreath around the ray gun head at Christmas and had the Martian machine in the staging yard.

I don't know about being angry or happy Martians, but my fellows were very eager to get the contract to operate the Krypton mine under the town of Rock Springs.  And even the Rock Springs residents got used to the unusual people wandering around town when it dawned on them how much they were spending at the local watering hole.

You can see them working hard at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTpNh8...xCLNa3Gw&index=4

One of my favorite movies! Nice job on the scene, although you are right, the other two war machines are hard (impossible) to see.

Lee, from what I've read about the Polar Lights Jupiter 2 model is that it's 1/35 scale so It would be a bit big for an O gauge layout but if it was put in a selective scene it might work. The model can be found on Ebay for anywhere from $80-200 and there is an LED kit for the engine core lights. The sound is a bit harder to do since most are samples from the show are electronically stitched together (there is major dissention on LIS boards as to how the sound was originally created) but I bet it could be done. I may just have to get the kit and add it to my "THINGS TO DO" list, along with my Tardis and Stargate!

Well, few people who visit my layout are experts on the proper size of flying saucers, so I doubt any vistor would turn to me and say - Don't you know that model is 48/35ths to big?  I figure the bigger the saucer, the better.

I too am putting this on a list of projects I want to do.  I could get carried away with saucers.  There is Klatu's of course from The Day the Earth Stood Still (the original, not that lame remake) - it also had great landing sounds - particuarly at the very last instance when it reaches the ground, and then United Planets Cruiser C57D, Forbidden Planet, which was "Robby the robot's" first starring role, before he went on to fame in Lost in Space.)

While Robby the Robot appeared in two episodes of Lost in Space, the Robinson robot was an unnamed B-9 robot.

There's a world of difference between the two.  This photo gleeped off the web shows the difference:
