Those who ordered the new Lionel Moguls probably have received them like myself and have been running them to log some break in time and to evaluate the low speed performance as some owners are reporting some running issues . Good news is that Lionel is tuned in to what the folks are reporting and working to resolve issues for owners. Thank you Dave Olsen for your help.

So in the middle of this , a little humor is injected into the proceedings. As the outside starts to get cooler, our basements will provide nice warm areas for crickets to migrate. So while I was running the Central Vermont Mogul with a short freight, I noticed a cricket crossing the track. Instinctively, I sounded the engines whistle and that cricket dashed across the track to get out of the way. So you thought it was over? Nah!. When the train passed, the cricket reversed direction and walked back across the tracks . Didn't see him for the rest of the operating session. Seems to be a cute moment in Hi Rail Hi Jinks.

booker110,

Have you not heard of BTO? Wait to long you may not find one.

Brian,

No offense intended I hope none taken. I just wonder to myself when I read a post saying "I do not preorder but will pick one up after I see one" or like you said " I will pick one up after the bugs have been worked out"........do they ever find one? I missed the Legacy K4s when they first came out in Legacy back in 2011. It took me three years of looking then I found one on the forum "For Sale/Trade forum". The built to order system on Lionel Legacy Scale engines is changing how you buy product you want. Some engines you may never see on a Hobby Store shelf.

As far as waiting for the bugs are worked out Lionel does have a top notch repair department so if you are one of the unfortunate few whose engine don't work as they should when purchased Lionel service will turn repairs around pretty quickly.

Hey Folks

The post was meant to do two things. One was to acknowledge and thank Lionel in their interest in working with users to achieve satisfaction with the product. Garys post above has a link to what has been discussed I detail and I believe most are appreciative and confident that the Lionel folks will address the concerns.

The second thing was to inject a little humor for the Mogul . I thought it was a fun experience that  I thought I would share. The Moguls are  a nice model and offering.

All the time. The larger dealers i.e. Charles Ro, Trainworld, almost always have extras for several months after delivery.

If that doesn't work theres often a smaller dealer with one sitting on the shelf if you hunt.

There are several bto locos from a year ago that currently can be had for upwards of $200 LESS than the best preorder price when originally offered.

This has been discussed before. It's ALWAYS been bto, just nowadays Lionel is pushing the idea to make the hobbyist feel like they will "miss out".

All the excitement over Lionel addressing the issues with this mogul.

What about the novel idea that it simply ran right out of the box??, not to mention the crummy cast coal load.

Lionel claims they were all tested. Oh the irony that they all run poorly when they get delivered. I've seen other videos by folks not yet complaining, and you can still see the jerking.

I used to preorder, not anymore. Between items not being delivered as described and the customer being the beta tester I'll pass.

If it's good, and it runs properly I'll gladly pay a few extra dollars since the guy who preordered has to return it  and pay additional shipping anyway.

RickO,

We are just going to have to agree to disagree on the subject of pre-ordering. I feel it is the best way to guarantee you get what you want and at a good price. I have pre-ordered several Legacy engines and have not yet been disappointed.

We can agree that everything should work right out of the box, all the time. I often thought if I owned a manufacturing company I would name it The Freaking Company, just so it would always be on the lips of the consumer such as "my Freaking car does not run" or " my Freaking watch has stopped" or " my Freaking toaster burnt my toast". However we have to live in the real world so it is nice to have a company that has a great repair service such as Lionel.

I think the complaints about the Moguls are not that bad to write them off. I think Lionel will fix the ones that are jerky quickly as even Dave from Lionel responded on that thread that they would take care of it. Yeah you will have to pay for shipping but that is part of the hobby now wether we like it or not.

Luckily you didn't "pre-order" one of the Lionel Legacy UP FEF-3 4-8-4 models with the Sellers Exhaust Steam Injector (#838), as specifically referenced in the catalog. The model delivered was simply #844 with road number 838 painted on the sides of the cab, i.e. NO Sellers Exhaust Steam Injector!!!!

So much for "you get what you want for a good price"!

HotWater,

I am a Pennsy guy so I did not order a FEF engine let alone a 838 so I was not disappointed. However I do remember looking at the catalog which showed the same injectors on the 838 as the 844. Even though the bullet point about each engine having specific injectors I thought " how are they going to do that without changing the molds". I also thought if I was Lionel I would rather have the molds represent the 844 as the majority of people would buy that one not the 838. Don't know if that's what happened but it is my guess. I can see why guys who ordered the 838 would be a little peeved. I do think Lionel is doing a good job with road specific details. Their engines may not be 100% accurate but neither am I.

The worst part about that BTO model was, I had a good friend who attends York twice a year, specifically ask the folks in the Lionel booth about the specifics of the 838 model. He was assure that the Worthington Feedwater system would indeed be removed from the basic boiler mold, since they are apparently "add-on parts" anyway. Thus, very definitely, the model of 838 would indeed be CORRECT! Such statements came directly from the representatives in the Lionel booth. So much for BTO, in my opinion.

HW,

I guess one mans treasure is another mans junk. I thought the feed water system was part of the mold not an add on part. I could be wrong my friend Alex has a 844 it looked like it was part of the mold but I did not try to take it apart Ha!

I was watching that hour and a half video about the 4449 tonight. Great video.

I agree with RICKO. I'm not buying any BTO anymore either. I allready got hosed with a VISION LINE GG1. They didn't even get the bell sound right on that one. Plus it had running issues. Couldn't fix it. Now I get a mogul and it also has running issue. And for those that say well this is the way it is then your letting them get away with poor quality. I wish it would get better. I do like LIONEL but there quality control needs to change for the good. And I'm not afraid to say it how it is.

What issues are there, am I somehow missing the thread about them?

Really?  I'm sorry I must use my favorite phrase again and mean no disrespect.  Have you been living under a rock the past two weeks?    Sorry I couldn't resist.

Dave is great.  Mines going back today if I can get to the UPS store.

My Mogul issues

If you were talking about the jumpy running at slow speeds, a couple report of such on these forums doesn't count as a major issue when compared to the total number of units made.  I thought the OP might have been referencing something else.  But it is nice to hear that Lionel is looking into it, even just for a small few.
