My layout has perfect 10 track signal all the way around, except for one block at the approach to a drawbridge. When the train enters this block, the signal drops to anywhere from 1 to 4, and I even get "out of range" sometimes. Power to the block is cut off by a switch when the bridge is up, and restored when the bridge is down.  I've tried the light bulb trick, but no improvement. If I run a jumper wire from the next block to the problem block, the signal goes to 10 almost instantly.  I've also bypassed the switch at the drawbridge to eliminate that, but that hasn't helped. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's always tuff to guess correctly at what exactly is wrong. Obviously all we can do is be a guide to help find the issue. I would take a spare length of cable and try bypassing different things until you pinpoint where the issue is. Most likely things can be a bad track connection, poor track joints, corrosion, etc. It's important to be methodical, and eliminate things one at a time.

Keep an open mind and don't rule things out unless you prove they work right.

Is this block totally isolated? Is there a chance that something bridges it to another block? Can you try cutting power off to adjoining blocks to make sure it's isolated fully?

John, when I visit you and see your layout later this month I will give it a look.   Don't go crazy and start changing things until we get together.  Right now I am back in Florida as my Mother passed two days ago.  I am looking forward to my visit in Maine.  You can call me any night if you wish.  I should be home the day before our trip to visit you.

We had a similar problem at the club with the draw bridge and it's protection system. The problem was solved by making the wires the same lenght. By adding the switch in the hot side, the outside rail connection is different. If the signal to the engine, and from the engine has a different time period, the signal value drops.

That explains to me why I got the results on my outside layout that others said should not matter. I rewired it to gain control of large consists. The mainline tracks outside are  way longer than most inside layouts. Although the rails in G scale are much thicker, there still were issues with signal when the layout grew to the current size and multiple engines were in a consist. I almost added TIU channels until I solved the issue by completely dividing the blocks. At first, I thought it might be a DC transmission problem. Trying AC did not solve anything. Although the transmission signal thing is over my head, I still know just enough to troubleshoot when layouts go south. I had to add in mother nature's wrath and look at things that never happened indoors. I also remember studying the MTH patents in the beginning to help learn what was actually going on and how to solve issues.

So over the years I've learned to keep an open mind and eliminate all possible issues by looking at everything. Having guidance from members here like Marty F. ,Barry, G, etc. makes looking so much easier. I use their posts and apply them to my issue. I'll be jealous to see that you get direct at home service from a pro!

Paul,

The problem was solved by making the wires the same lenght. By adding the switch in the hot side, the outside rail connection is different. If the signal to the engine, and from the engine has a different time period, the signal value drops.

With all due respect, that's incorrect and was an early DCS "urban myth". Whatever corrected your problem, that wasn't it.

John H,

Like Marty I would actually need to see your layout to eliminate your problem.  Wait for Marty before you start any drastic rework.

Gentlemen,

Typical of our OGR forum the man needing everyones help and prayers steps up to help eliminate a problem with another man hobby.

Marty,

If there is anything any of us can do, please let us know.  Very sorry about your Mom.  May God hold her close always.
