With an older serial tiu and one with USB, can I leave them connected as update the USB and have both units update together without fussing with serial ports?

The only way to update the serial-port only TIU is through the serial port from the DCS loader, so the answer I suspect is wrong. You'll have to "fool" with serial ports.
Thanks John, I was afraid that was the answer, I have also ordered the book recommended for newby DCS users from Amazon, This is almost like learning a new aircraft system, one level at a time.
The aircraft systems were simpler. 
Chuckling, That depends on age factor, in my youth I absorbed a NATOPS, my last tour it took me long nights of rote memorization to keep the dang systems separate and functionable in my brain housing group.
At least the DCS is a fun addition, as my grandkids grow and hopefully get involved, they will whip Grandpa into some sort of GEEK.
