It's addressed to a different car, but you have the same sort of problem, hence the same solution should apply.

Do I have to be concerned with static electricity , special gloves , floor mat ?

It would be a good idea.  As we enter the winter season the air gets really dry, both inside and outside our houses and structures, increasing the chance of a static spark if you don't ground yourself.

A wrist strap would probably be sufficient, although if you'd like to be extra careful a bench mat would be an add-on.  Both of these get connected to earth ground, usually a cold water pipe, or a center screw on an outlet cover (but never inside the outlet box).

However, your car does not appear in any of the Lionel service supplements and I have not found any other Lionel documentation for it beside the parts list: https://www.lionelsupport.com/...amp;CFTOKEN=33055634

However, the PCB setup is a common one and so if you look up "Milwaukee Road GP-20 Diesel Locomotive with Railsounds, Command Control, Wiring Diagram" in my index, you will see the wiring diagram in the following pages. Your sound car is extremely similar, sans the motor controls and other locomotive specifics and one should be able to glean all that is needed to understand the wiring of your sound car.

Thanks so much for your help. I unplugged everything from mother board and replugged all except a 2 wire pick-up plug next to the speaker housing. There is 2 places it can plug into. One says J1 and the other J2. Unfortunately , I did not take photo before I started.  The schematic of the GP-20 was different enough for me not to follow confidently . I think it was plugged into J2. Here is a photo.

I would guess J2 as well - that can be substantiated by tracing the two wires from the connector. The one on the left (facing the J2 silk screen text) should connect up with the center rail pickup. The one on the right should find its way to the frame/ground.

In testing it again, you have to put your ear up to the speaker and then you barely hear the sound , just as before. 

Make sure the volume adjustment is all the way up. Sometimes the volume potentiometer could use a shot of contact cleaner, or try just working it back and forth several times.

Yes. I worked the volume pot. vigorously but no change.. I sent it in to Only 3 rail and Chuck Sartor fixed it..... Volume pot.   go figure...  Thanks just the same though..
