in SoCal we have two problems...
1) no basements.
2) who wants to be indoors?
come to think of it... not much of a problem.
cheers...gary

All year, gave up cutting grass and other stuff to run trains.

Never ends, all year for me...
I wish I had more time to spend on the layout but with this forum I can keep the juices flowing by checking in here daily. We are the midst of our busy season here at work, selling to school teachers, we count the days to Labor Day like it is shopping days to Dec 25th! I have some plans to do some work after we slow down a little here.
I think I'm a 24/7 365 days a year Train Season but actual running is a very small part of it.
Back to work!
Posting this question in July, I'm not surprised by the number of year round comments. Ask it in November and I think you'd get a much greater number of people who say it's a fall/winter hobby. They reserve spring/summer for more outdoor pursuits.
And then I'd say there is likely a garden railroad minority who are mostly active during the nicer weather.
I'd be curious if the OGR guys had forum traffic data broken out by month to show the seasonal ups and downs of the hobby.
After October York. Too much outside work and other seasonal hobbies leaves little time to stay inside and play trains.
Usually in late Sept after summer fun & activities. Layout is perm so occasionally I take a look at things for some ideas, but hardly get into running them, gets too warm for all that running around and fixes.
Starts November 1,2012 ends November 1,2013, begins again November 1 2013 ends November 1,2014...
Never ends for me, but due to family and work demands, there are times when I don't get to do any trains for a month or so.
It never start's because it never end's.
I always used to think that the inclement weather months (late September to late April) were for trains, but lately I've found, much to my wife's consternation, that I can spend time working on the layout, building something, wiring something, etc, just about any time of year. Started building Don McQuaig's catenary system just a couple of weeks ago. Right in the middle of summer. Guess I'm stuck as a year 'rounder.

Yesterday, it's always the same answer-yesterday.

24/7/365...sometimes fortunately; sometimes unfortunately.
Everyday Is Christmas on the "Leapin Larry's Looney Lines RR". We enjoy the Spirit All Year Long. Thanks for Asking?
Every day ,year round ,and always at christmas time .

When the Official Proclaimer of Seasons Daffy Duck says so!

You mean there is such a thing as train season? I will have to brush up on my terms and see what I can do. I run trains all year long, especially in the summer, as it is too hot to go outside.

In Houston, I think most of the year is train season, because Daffy would agree, it is usually too HOT to go outside!
Just took down a garage layout it his past Spring. I'm in SC, so I could only do winter work/running out there. I'm now building in an upstairs family room and am happy to be able to do it year-round! My other hobby is my Jeep, so that definitely has more of my attention in the Summer, but I get up there at least every other day and do a little work.
Open season year round! It's just some days nothing happens and other I limit out! lol
Train time starts as soon as my first cup of morning coffee is ready!
Train season, though, starts in late summer when the north Texas train events begin.
When I was a kid, I hated nothing more than taking the trains down after the Christmas holidays. And so today there's never an "off season" for trains.
Morning of December 25, 1947!
24/7 365!!!
Since my retirement 9 yrs ago trains have become a way of life rather than just a hobby so I guess there's no real season.
All 4 seasons for me!
For me it's November 1st. Any time spent on my layout prior is a bonus. Yardwork and get-together s really take up the free time during the summer.
with that said I just threw down $300 on Atlas track yesterday, trying to get a jump start.
I'm one of the "Lucky Ones" also. "Train Season" happens 24/7, 365 around our home.
December 25th 1959 6am and has never stopped
About 1955.
It never ends! Little distraction in the summer with the DMC.
The Lionel Collectors Club UK show is always May/June so train activities carry on all year.
Got to crack on with our layout mountain when I get back from vacation.
Also ordered some of the Lionel/LCCA FasTrack module kits. To give me a head start with
a show layout (keep stripping our home layout for shows which really slows down progress).
Any one with any experience of building modules from scratch? I'll have to build 6 corner units and 1 straight.
Regards
Nick
I used to remember in late August/early September when the Sears Wish Book showed up. Let the dreaming begin!
It never ends! It is my hobby all year round.
Maybe we should ask the Donald: Duck. He has a layout!
It doesn't end as it is a constant cycle year-round.
Its all year for me. My primary focus is my permanent layout in the basement. By Thanksgiving, I switch gears and put up my tinplate layout under the Christmas tree. It provides a nice switch from all the modern stuff.
Again, I too am an all-year-round person with my trains. But the nature of the weather means I do spend a little more time with them in the winter, when there are often few other options for fun entertainment on a yucky winter-weather day.
The season begins July 1 and ends June 30
Al
For me it starts January 1st and ends December 31st of each year!!
Alan
Start, I didnt know it ended...
As soon as the weather begins to cool off around Sept/Oct, but it hits full force like a hurricane around Thanksgiving.
It would be year around, if it was'nt so warm in my train room during the summer months.
