My method is pretty the same as p51's in regards to populating cars; in that I also don't attempt to pose populated cars on the layout as if they're in motion, but rather parked or stopped at an intersection or crossing grade.  Something just doesn't look quite right seeing road traffic not moving unless you're modelling LA freeways during rush hour (whoever came up with that name, anyway, it's anything but ).

 

I believe in adding people everywhere. The people definitely make a layout more realistic.  You are right though, once you start adding them you have to do it everywhere on the layout otherwise it just doesn't look right and that takes awhile.

How about buses?  Corgi would be easier as they have seats.
