Guys and gals
I have a Williams brothers [pre Bachmann] scale Hudson. Bought it on Ebay and it functioned fine for a short while.Now the electronic E Unit is stuck in reverse. I've used my larger Lionel and AF transformers thinking it's a wattage issue but no go. I'm open to any ideas that can get it to work or at the least get it to run forward.

Switch the wires on the motor and it will run in forward.

CAn you post a picture of the E-unit? It may be repairable and I have some Williams E-units in stock, if you need a replacement. G
The big motor in the scale Hudson seems like it could be too much for the standard Williams E-unit.
The bridge rectifier for forward operation (the one with the screw hole all the way through) failed in my first Hudson twice. I replaced it with a more hefty rectifier and it lasted until putting in the ERR Cruise Commander that was used for prototype testing.
I recently bought another scale Hudson and the E-unit is flaky in it. If the old one with the bigger rectifier can be located in my parts stash, it might be time to change it.
You could change the rectifier on yours with one that handles 6 - 8 amps or so.
The Williams E unit is rated for 6 amps. Most DC motored engines only draw 2 at best.
Does the engine have 3 neutrals and then move or does it simply move in the same direction every time you raise the voltage?

It's a long shot at best....Place a listing in the 'Want To Buy Forum'. The very part you're needing could be in someone's misc. parts drawer.

There is no pause in the e unit, it's constantly in reverse so it's not cycling at all. I'll get it out tomorrow and get a photo of the unit but the lack of capacity in the rectifier makes sense . The tru-blast sound works OK with a Lionel base transformer from a polar express set but not with a postwar transformer .
This is my first modern era three rail engine , I usually tinker with prewar and some postwar equipment. I purchased it because I've wanted a scale hudson for years and I picked this one up for a fraction of an original Lionel unit costs . Love the engine but the innards are a sweet mystery to me.
What upgrades can I do to this engine to enhance it's performance?
Did you try taking your engine completely off the track for five minutes and then try it again? Your transformer may not go fully to zero and that will allow some voltage through to keep the circuit board in the same position.
Otherwise you will need a new circuit board.

These two boards were mounted with sticky tape and a zip tie. After looking at other units on line I'm wondering if this is some custom arrangement.
OK, so at minimum a replacement is in order or to just reverse the wiring to the motor till I can do that.

The sticky tape and zip ties are normal for old Williams E units. I've worked on several that were held together that way.
