I have available 2  40" X  64"  hinged pieces  giving me a total  80" X  64"  I don't have any layout planning software.  I would like to use Lionel FasTrak . Just trying to find something simple so I can set up and tear down in short time. Not sure if above layout could be modified to fit. Maybe there is something already on here that I could be directed to! Thanks Tom Weaver

Tom,

You are a little short in the overall length, 108" versus 80", but you can shorten the layout by removing straights sections of track.  That will cost you some of the functionality.

Do you want to permanently mount the track to the folding tabletops?

Jan

Yes that would be my intention. Would fold in center so collapsed it would be 40" X 64"

Hi Tom,

I modified Jan's rendition to correct a software error (in all model rr software) for the length of the O31 switches. They were announced and marketed at 10" in length, but are actually 11 3/8" long when manufactured. The corrections are not yet in the software, so a 1 3/8" was added to compensate.

I reworked the track plan for fitment with the switch corrections and to get a longer length for the passing siding. It can hold a 20" engine and about 4 -13" cars now.

I have marked the centerline at 40". Removing the screws from a few adjoining tracks on either side of the light blue tracks would allow you to remove them to separate or fold the  40" x 64" sections. You could also cut the tracks with fine blade hacksaw on a 45° angle at the centerline for folding. Folding in would require the same motion. Folding away from the center wouldn't matter.

Notes are added for pertinent information. I have printed the track plan and inventory list in .pdf. Here's the track plan in a .jpg for your review.

Any questions, post them. Merry Christmas!

THANK YOU!!  no more procrastination. Now I will be able to get something back up if only short periods of time!  Now to store room (ok rooms)  to pull inventory to see what I need! The boards will fold away from center line so makes easier!  I may take your offer up on additional questions!  Merry Christmas to you!  Thanks Tom Weaver (playing with trains since 1948)

Tom,

Thanks for photo. I never know what to expect from the CTT layout articles.  There's room on this version for buildings and accessories.

I forgot to note that the small 1/4 turn is included with the switch also. So, subtract 5 - O31 11.25° turns and the 5- 1 3/8" that were used for the length correction. That should result in 55 pieces of track.

The roadbed is going to fit right up to the edge, so ensure that the dimensions are 80" x 64" at a minimum or we'll have to adjust by removing an 1 3/8" for width or replacing the 4.5" with some short fitters for length on the 64" side.

I follow my posts and my email is in my profile.

Carl,

Thanks for the info on the FasTrak switches.  I don't generally play with that product.

Tom,

Folding the table with the trackside out exposes the track any any mounted scenery to be damaged.  If you folded the layout with trackside in, it will be protected.  One way to fold it in you mount the hinges, i.e. the hinge line, above the top of the track.  There are other methods you can use, especially if you leave any tall scenery or accessories on the table.

Hi Tom,

How's things? Well, to fit O48 on the table gives up a passing loop. O48 switches won't fit, they are too long on the thru. here's what I have for the table with the separation into sections.

Also, it may not get thru the passing switch, which is O36.

This will let you run it on the outer loop.

I experimented with copying the whole layout with Ross O42 curves and switches. The length of the switches would require the table to be 76" wide. So, if you handle and store 2 - 40" x 76" halves you can build it all in O42 Ross Custom switches track and switches.
