Greetings,

I seem to have developed a problem with viewing the posts to the OGR  Hi Rail forum.  For several weeks all was well, then about a week ago, I see a black screen covering the posts after about 1/3 of the way through viewing the daily digest. I can tell there are posts behind the blackened area, but have no idea how to view the posts unless I go to the topical list.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Michael Pags

Hello again,

Sorry for posting again, but the problem persists and it makes viewing posts on the forum very troublesome, if not impossible.  I even tried to scroll to the very end of the daily digest, but after a few seconds the screen goes black. I can still see there are posts behind the black screen, which only covers the digest.  Is this a something on my MacBookPro? I use Firefox as the web browser, but the problem persists when I use Safari as well.

Thanks,

Michael

Thanks for your reply. Here's more info. After opening Safari and attempting to review the daily digest, I realized the problem occurs in my email program, not web browser. When I open the email with the daily digest posts, the black screen problem is in that viewing.  I then go to the ORG forum website and the problem does not exist (Firefox or Safari), but I have to open each topic to see the contents.  I would prefer to be able to view the posts via the daily digest and quickly see the contents of each topic.

I will see if any of the settings in my Macmail program will solve this.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi again. OK, I have played with settings in my email account and can provide the following info.  First to confirm the problem, it appears to happen when I scroll through the daily digest and come to a post with a video attached. For example in the today's daily digest, I get as far as the topic: Running Engines a little our of the mainstream and the post by BANDOB.  All fine until I get to that point, then screen goes black for the rest of the entire digest.  Now here's a possible resolution: if I go into my mail preferences and in the Viewing page, uncheck "Load remote content in messages", the black screen disappears!  If I recheck it, the black screen reappears.  If I uncheck the box, I also lose some other info, such as the OGR banner.  Not sure I want to keep that box unchecked, but I may do it just to review the daily digest.

If you have any other thoughts or suggestions, I would appreciate them.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Rich,

It sounds like it's probably a bug in his mail client. You might have him try a different email client or perhaps webmail to see if he experiences the same problem?

Short of that, we'll need more details, including:

  1. What mail client and version he's using, as well as what OS X version.
  2. Any screenshots exhibiting the problem would be helpful.

It might also help if he could forward one of the emails exhibiting the issue to engineering@socialstrata.com.

Thanks,

Brian

There ya go...

Hello again,

I have a MacBookPro running OS 10.11.2.  The mail program is Mail version 9.2  (3112).  I attached a screen shot of the point of the daily digest where the black screen appears.  Also, if I immediately scroll past this point when I first open the digest there is no black screen, but it appears after about 10 seconds.

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Rich,

Yeah, that almost surely has to be a bug with Apple Mail. Here's the post that has the issue in his email:

https://ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/t...36#49437928591770836

In the post, there's just an iframe for a video player. It has an explicit width and height set. It's really very basic, primitive HTML. This is all that's in the HTML for that post:

<iframe frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/video-embed/t/0/c/49297155968421737/p/49437928591770839" width="560"></iframe></p>

I'm not sure what we could possibly do differently, so he may want to report this issue to Apple.

He's still welcome to forward the email to engineering@socialstrata.com, as that would allow us to confirm my assessment above.

Thanks,

Brian

I hope that helps, Michael.

Here's the latest. I downloaded a program to clear the cache from my computer and did that.  No difference.  Then I decided to erase all deleted email messages from my email account.  This includes several past daily digests.  No problem viewing today's digest, but I do not recall if there were any videos.  I also noticed that the problem also included not being able to see all the photos even though the screen was not black in that section.  Saw all the photos today.  I will keep erasing the daily digest after moving into trash and see if that resolves the issue.

Thanks,

Michael
