No need for the button if the alkaline batteries brought it back, that was just the next step if they didn't.
The proper operation of the charger is first alternating red lights that slow as it charges, then alternating green lights, finally steady green lights indicating fully charged.
I recommend being careful with pencil erasers on the contacts. The pink erasers are abrasive and will wear the very thin gold flash off the contacts. When that happens, you'll have real problems ever getting a reliable connection! This used to be a continuing issue with older electronics with lots of card edge connectors. I can't count the number of destroyed cards I saw where they cleaned the contacts with an eraser whenever they had an issue.
