Good Morning Everyone,

Finished this up a couple weeks ago.   Was a Lionel PS-1 Army Transportation Corps boxcar.   I added the Corps of Engineers lettering using individual dry transfer lettering from Woodland Scenics.   The castle logo is a sticker from Military graphics.   The last 20 years of my working career were spent as the head machinist with the US Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District so this has a personal connection.

New Haven double-sheathed boxcars #78000 and #78006 are recent models by MTH. These cars were designed by the United States Railroad Administration during World War 1. They had a heavy steel underframe, steel ends and roofs, and wooden sides. Some 24,500 cars of this USRA design were accepted by 24 railroads and many remained in service during and after World War 2.

A special connection for me, as well, as my dad worked for many years with the Corps as a real estate appraiser for the land the Corps would acquire for infrastructure projects. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Bill,

Always glad to hear of another fellow Corps of Engineers member!

Thank you, Nick! My dad passed from colon cancer in 1999 and your car brought back fond memories of him. One Corps-related memory is from 1977. I was a junior in high school when my dad got me on a tour of then Commonwealth Edison's Dresden Nuclear Power Station and the under-construction Collins oil-fired backup station with EPA officials. He told me to dress up in a suit and tie so I wouldn't look out of place. It was fascinating!

Tom

Very nice Tom, I really like the ACY. It's been snowing here for 2 days with another week promised. 12 At once or a couple a day, sucks either way LOL.

Rutland Railroad #8086 is a recent MTH Premier model (20-99353) made as a special run by forum sponsor Public Delivery Track. It arrived on my doorstep on 01/06/2024 and is the most highly detailed O gauge plastic boxcar model that I’ve seen. In my opinion, it’s at least as good as boxcar models by Atlas O. I’m including several photos to show the fine details of this car. I’ve previously posted photos of my New York Central and New Haven versions.

These cars were designed by the United States Railroad Administration during World War 1. They had a heavy steel underframe, steel ends and roofs, and wooden sides. Some 24,500 cars of this USRA design were accepted by 24 railroads and many remained in service during and after World War 2.

The Rutland Railroad had 300 such cars with road numbers between #8000 and #8299 - built in 1924. About 100 were still in use in 1953 and 16 lasted until the end of the railroad.

About a month ago I posted images of my new AtlasO wagontop boxcar painted for freight service.  Just received my fifth one, although I did not plan to have that many.  I ordered this Atlas car back in early 2021 and after getting tired of waiting, I bought several Weaver wagontops at the last York meet.  Oh well, there are great looking cars and add a bit of color to my Pennsy express train.

Like the Atlas wagontop boxcar I posted earlier, this Atlas express car (on right) sits a bit lower than my Weaver express car.  Other than that, they are identical.  The color is very different and I think I like the Weaver's color better.

Beautiful boxcars Ron! I wish they fit my modeling era. I'd have 5 too LOL.

MELGAR, your comparison of your nice new MTH Rutland boxcar to an Atlas model reminded me of an observation I made about cars from these manufacturers.

The Narragansett Beer reefer is an Atlas model.  The Atlas Beer car is by MTH.  They appear identical to me except for the side ladder.  The quality of the MTH car is easily equivalent to the Atlas.  I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they were made from the same tooling in the same factory.

@Steam Crazy,

John,

I've also begun to wonder whether the same tooling is being used by different manufacturers. I would like to know how many factories are making O gauge models in China. I can't imagine that they're really huge factories.

Picked up this X6014 Baby Ruth PRR Scout type boxcar from 51-56 came in White or Red as shown along with 6 other cars from Christmas. Nice looking cars all! God Speed!

Mark,

I love hunting for these cars at shows. There are so many variations. One car that eluded me for awhile was the white WIX. If one was available the price was always off the wall. eBay was even worse. Then one day this car showed up. It was generally filthy and had smudges. It did appear to be intact. I took a chance; gave it a bath and gently scrubbed. Here’s the result.

Ron,

I had a similar situation; although mine was CRS rather than impatience. I ordered a PRSL RCA car with a wagon top. About a year later there was another PRSL RCA car but it didn’t have a wagon top. I had forgotten about the first one; and Berwyns doesn’t charge until the product is in. The second car came pretty quick. Then the wagon top came in. I got a notice of payment due for a RCA car. I called up and said that I already got it. He said this is the earlier wagon top that you ordered. The wagon top is a little smaller because it’s RK; but it’s a nice variation.

I have recently been bitten by the Kusan Bug.  I actually did a seperate post yesterday.  However since Boxcar Sunday wanted to add these pictures of a K-Series Boxcar.  I think these cars are so neat, with one door molded-in open and one door closed.  First Photo shows both sides, Weaver car is for size comparison.  These aren't super small, like Marx, even though they were produced as entry level.  Second picture shows how much smaller they are than scale.

Does anyone here happen to own this new MTH double-sheathed boxcar? I would love to see a photo of it if you do. I caught a glimpse of it in a video from YT posted here but I couldn't find it when I went back to look for it. This is an MTH product image - hopefully okay to post here. The item number is 20-99342.

New York Central #161523 double-sheathed wood-sided boxcar (built 1919) and Bangor & Aroostook #1407 single-sheathed wood-sided boxcar (built 1930) ran behind New York Central USRA 0-6-0 steam locomotive #231 on my 10'-by-5' layout. The NYC model of #161523 was made by MTH Premier and the BAR model of #1407 was made by Weaver/CMP.
