I completely agree with Alex.

I would also like to see some smaller steam(they have been broadening the horizon). I think if they could get the toolings done for American 4-4-0's scale, and in semi-scale(of some sort) it would be a good market. With the introduction of the spark arrestor in the Heisler, it really peaked my interest in hoping that some of the late 1900's engines with them would soon come out of the woodwork. How cool would it be to have wood/coal/oil options on those?

A lot of great ideas coming from everyone, I can wait for my 4-4-0, so put that on the back burner Lionel and see what else is a great choice to start with and get back to me on the 4-4-0.

No new Lionmaster stuff in 2017 after 2 years with the challenger and Class A. Most likely we might see another steamer or 2 maybe they devote a lot of the Catalog to making a 4014 with an Oil Tender to look like the finished prototype in the near future. We haven't seen a Big Boy or a T-1 in 7+ years. But we haven't seen the NYC Hudson again after it was produced a long time ago and the SD90s. For other stuff, Its hard to find certain Legacy Steamers now even on the 2nd hand market. Down the road I would like to get Santa Fe 3751 again. 

I just got two things on my list:

A Lionmaster Cab Foward

A Santa Fe 3751

Now I have a prediction for the next VL product. The next VL loco will be a NW Class A. Just because you haven't seen a Scale Class A done by Lionel since 1999-2003 time frame. But that may not be the only next VL loco, the reissue of the Challengers UP and Clinchfield)

Also can we have them run the loco on a test track before releasing it so it can save us the stress of packing it back up and sending it off? A lot of engines have been sent back to them and if they test these when they get to the states maybe they can trouble shoot the problems.

Just some thoughts, what would you guys like to see in the next Catalog?

 

I think the issue with Lionmaster, is that Lionel made it really clear on its last run of them (in the Notch 6 podcast) that they would see how sales were and decide on Lionmaster's fate. Well all the guys who always say they want Lionmaster did not buy them.  I bought 2 (UP and Rio Grande) and they are excellent runners, fantastic smokers and look awesome.  But sales on that run seemed poor (based on talking to my hobby shop's pre-orders and store sales).  Everyone who kept saying they want them never seemed to open their wallets.  So not sure we will see them anytime soon.

I assume Lionel has the old K-line tooling?

A reissue of the old K-Line tooled 4-6-6 suburban tank or it's Hudson predecessor with Legacy would be sweet especially since it was designed to run 0-31 min curves.  However, the access to the tooling for both of these superb K-Line models has been a tight lipped affair.  Several years ago when Lionel announced they obtained use of the K/L Berks, Mikado, A5 and 2-truck Shay tooling for Legacy offerings, I pestered Mike R at several York meets about the 4-6-6, but each time Mike said L did not have or plans to use what remains the last of the scale steam K-Line tooling. 

Possibly Bachmann/Williams's parent Co., Kader, still has the tooling for both the Sub-tank and Hudson and are either demanding a high price for its use or are holding on to it for possible future use if Bachmann/Williams slowly continue to expand their O gauge product line.  The K-L 4-6-6 or Hudson would certainly be a great premier model to offer by anyone.

That is a very valid and important point.  Many times we see here if they make "XYZ" I'd buy it no matter what.  Well did you?  I always make it a point of buying what I've asked for if it gets made.  I've asked for a scale GG-1 with Legacy and Lionel produced a VL so I put my money where my mouth was and pulled the trigger.  Years ago in the PWC series I asked for a Southern F3 ABA, they made it, I bought it.  I have bugged MTH for more Lionel Celebration cars and caboose for the tinplate line and have those on order.

Now I have asked for another Scale Polar Express run.  The new catalog has it...I'm getting it. 

I think it's a very important point that no matter who the manufacturer / importer is when we all clamor for an item and then it gets made we need to put our $$ where our mouth is.

I applaud Lionel's scale line of trains. The catalog is again filled with many highly detailed, sophisticated items for big-radius layouts. I have many of these Legacy trains myself. But this market does not represent everyone.

There are many of us with tighter curves who also love traditional and postwar inspired products. It's not a dying market. I'm 46, not a dinosaur. Let's bring back Pullmor open frame AC motors. Bring back Magne-Traction. Bring back the smell of ozone and grinding motors.

I realize I'm being overly optimistic. Current Lionel management hasn't shown much interest in cataloging these types of products. In fact, with the dissolution of the archives, they probably don't know what a Pullmore looks like anymore...

Along those lines, now that Lionel has taken a good step in the Vol. 2 catalogue towards smaller Legacy steam and diesel that will run on tighter radius tracks (down to O-31) for those with smaller layouts, how about some smaller passenger cars/sets, maybe even with sound, to go with the new engines ?

The reason why I bought my Challenger was because of the video with your DRG Challenger. I bought the Class A because of the Challenger.

Lionel needs to eliminate the BTO probably be a few years before Lionmaster will return or maybe we have seen the end of it

They did #6755 as an M1a a few years back, but it would be very interesting to see them do an M1b. I doubt they will, but it is definitely something that they should consider. I think we had had a discussion last year talking about K4's that many want to see the K5's(Pacific). I do believe someone had said one of the manufactures(maybe 3rdRail) had done some time back. It would be great if they(any of them) made any of these great ideas.

You know I would bet that the 2018 catalog is already set to go. I would bet that a actual catalog for any given period is in final stages any where from 6 months to 9 months in advance. Once you do make your so cal final prep it still needs to be approved which take time to research all is able to be produced ( if they get enough orders ( which to me is another joke ) If you want to do input for a catalog I would bet you need to be looking at least a year if not 2 years in advance. 

You want a realistic idea how far in advance you need to think, Ask Mark from Menards how far in advance do they start the process to develop a new item, to the time they actually have it ready for market. Right now I bet still at least 3 months but there just reusing old they have already used but with a different paint scheme.  To go from scratch to finish product I bet it's well over 6 months and then you need to produce a catalog from that.

And.......The J3a from the 50th anniversary set with swinging bell and a choice of  standard or PT tender.

This one easily surpasses the 700e in detail and accuracy,  and with legacy sounds and features IMO could be Lionels greatest hudson ever.

I have been saving for this locomotive in Vision Line or at least Legacy!  I have the 50th Anniversary Set with #5433 and the separate  sale J3a Hudson #5444. They are the nicest looking Hudsons Lionel ever made. Now we need a Legacy version.

I'd like to see an Acela that's reliable, i.e., no infra-red couplers/tethers (https://www.lionelsupport.com/...ents/73-1714-251.pdf).

I'd buy one of the originals ... and the extra cars ... but I have a few "ess curves" on my layout.  These seem to be deal-breakers.  Even though they're O72 ess curves, I've been spooked by much of what I've read concerning the Acela...

I ordered a scale Polar Express set myself, missed out on the first one. Wife told me she would help me pay for it.

Lionel can still have the people in China make the Pullman-Standard PS-2 2-bay covered hoppers with the wide support channels on each end, according to the Volume 2 catalog. The Elgin, Joliet & Eastern and the Delaware & Hudson had that specific PS-2 2-Bay covered hopper. They need to finally have the employees in China produce the EJ&E and D&H PS-2 2-Bay covered hoppers.

There was a Canadian version of the FA which ended up on VIA as second hand power.  I am surprised Lionel has not made a VIA set in O-27 using the FA and FB diesels, and the older 2400 passenger car molds in blue and yellow.

Did K-Line make a 4-6-4T? Or only the 4-6-6T?

And...... if you look closely at the driver detail on the VL Hudson. You'll notice they used the k line j1e tooling for the drivers. And possibly the cab and/or backhead and even some of the piping detail.

Maybe the "hallowed" k line Hudson will reappear with legacy one day.
