Simple fix to update 2 chuffs to 4 on older Lionel locomotives

Sam, It depends on the engine but no way is really simple. If the sound board is in the tender then wheel magnets and a reed switch are easiest.

In the engine you can swap out cams, use an optical or magnetic sensor on a driver or use GRJ electronics on the motor to do. Lots of choices.

Note that the magnets on the tender wheel may be somewhat to way off from 4-chuffs.

I've done many with my Chuff-Generator, and I've recently done several with the cam swap.  3D printing and a 2-piece cam make it easier to do the cam.  I used to use magnets on the driver with a reed switch, but that was troublesome, at least for me.

Thanks Pete and John. Wanting to upgrade the Erie Pacific and the C&O 2-10-4 both from early 2000's. The 3D 2 piece cam sounds like a good choice. Who sells them please?

Sam, nobody really “sells” the 2 piece split cams. It’s a 3D print file. To add, it’s not an exacting science, it takes some tweaking and adjusting to get the system to work reliably…….if you have access to, or know someone with a 3D printer, I can send you the file that was shared to me by forum member Sid. If not, I can get you some halves to piddle with ……
