Based on your item number your provided 6-28855, Lionel has the motor in stock.  Far easier to just purchase a new motor isn't it?  Even more confusing, is that item number motor doesn't have a worm gear.  Its like the one on the right in your picture.

That exact part is the motor that is sitting to the right of the motor with the worm gear. New motor does not have the worm gear installed

Send it to Pat at @harmonyards, he can take them off and has the tools to do it.

FWIW, you're not going to put the worm on the left on that motor on the right, you need a shaft on the motor to install the worm.

I am not quite tracking on the last part. Won't the whole shaft and worm gear come off of the motor to go onto the new one? If not, I don't see what parts on the Lionel support website I would need

If your engine is in fact 6-28855 then it uses a Liondrive motor like the one on the right, not a motor with a gear on it.

If on the other hand you need a motor with a gear on it then you need to get another motor with dual shafts. Removing the gear requires a special puller and usually involves destroying the motor its removed from.

Well, that is odd, because that is the engine I am working with, but the defective motor that I pulled has the gear attached to it

It really helps if we see the actual parts we're dealing with!  You specifically said worm in the first post, so with that picture, I assumed the one with the worm was the defective motor.

The one with the worm is the defective motor. The one on the right is the replacement that shows on the Lionel support website

Either someone changed the truck or the stock number is wrong. Pull the other motor out and see if it has a gear. If it does then the engine stock number is wrong.

Here is the engine box and shell for reference. Stock number is correct, and the trucks look to be factory

Double check the parts diagram you are using. These two motors are from different engines.

I got the motors directly from the Lionel support website with the exact part number shown on the box

The part numbers on the two motors are the same (RS 385PH).   Could it be the coupling (the back ring)  and worm have frozen on to the yoke on the motor?   Maybe the motor got hot, which is what led to this freeze.  Does the flywheel spin freely on that motor.  Try rocking  worm back and forth.   If that fails. since the old motor is bad, first try some WD 40 on the coupling and worm. Then some gentle persuasion with two flat blade screwdrivers under the coupling or the worm.   Better yet find a wheel/gear puller

The motor Norton showed does not have appear to have that coupling

Those motors look pretty similar. I would guess it is my best shot

Sam, one other thing you can do. If your engine is actually 28855, then as noted before, it has Liondrive. With Liondrive you can rotate the truck 90 degrees and it will disconnect from the engine and drop down. Not all the way as the power wires will still be attached but far enough to see the ball drive on the other motor. Actually the truck being removed this way will prove its Liondrive.

Then the mystery will be how did the motor with the gear get there.
