Spent a couple of weeks in the 80’s going there to clean out his house after he passed - wish I knew there were so many interesting train stores in the area!!!

Upon examination I decided to move the runaround track leftward to a much more natural position immediately beside the mainline thus creating a proper passing siding appearance. Of course I had to move the paint factory and shorten what had been the runaround into a stub spur. A more railroad-like trackplan with no loss of operation potential. I like it.

Lew

Very nice Lew I like it

I ran my choo choos tonight!  Was feeling a bit blah but that helped!   I have developed a plan for my farm house and barn.  Looks like I may have to build my first tunnel and hill!!!   : )    Ran my 1401 Southern engine with my tablet.    System worked good.   Stuff is all dirty from the expansion.   Couldn't believe how dirty everything was!!

Next I need to close off the rest of the new wall and plug the holes I had to cut in the ceiling to access wiring.  I'm not 100% satisfied with how it worked out but I reckon it will do.  Now to do some research!

700 pages.     WOW.

Jim

Paul, I wish my mountain looked half as good as yours.

In the meantime, I had another 'dang it!'  Trying to create a footer for my Seven Macs building, the spray paint peeled the top layer of the foam board.  Not sure I can glue it back down or look for another material to use.  Did manage to get some positive results with lighting so there's that.

Paul 2, Looks wonderful! I cat wait to see the water on the falls! Do you pre paint any of the white on the bottom of the falls before you put it up?

Dave, looks great! At this pace you are going to run out of thing to do! Plus its making me feel lazy! LOL

Jim, I am glad you took time out to run some trains, it was starting to sound like you were getting a little down. Be careful on the ladder fixing the holes! There getting closer! MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Bob, its all good! Now your ready for the real thing on the layout! Just not so thin! LOL

Brian, great pictures! I also have that crane and need to make some tracks for it, I don't think MTH Makes any! I hope your all doing well!

Last edited by mike g.

Mike g, I will be painting the river bottoms. I just got a couple of colors from Scenic Express for that. I am thinking of using black for the back of the waterfalls. When I go down to the basement shortly I'll see if the waterfalls came out using silicone caulk. This was a first try for me. Hesitate that I might  have not made it thick enough to be able to separate it from the wax paper. I will know shortly.......Paul

Brian, Yes the crane looks neat.  I have one that needs some work, but it will sit until the layout is well on it's way.  Maybe when I retire.

Bob, Good advice, and the front fascia and fill is looking great!  If you make it too pretty, you won't want to take any off to expand!

I did a little bit of work putting in the little brackets that hold the table top to the Mianne.  I had been on hold for a while as I contemplated different ideas of how I wanted to extend my table top to support the turnback loops.  I'll go into that in more detail later when I have some photographs to go with it.  Nothing earth shattering for sure!!  I have been a bit slow getting over this flu/virus/whatever.  I put off visiting my aunt and parents at their personal care homes this week.  I didn't want to carry something in those places.

I do not know if I will be going back to work at the company I have worked at for the past 22 years.  They just aren't coming up with budget money to do projects they said they needed me for.  So I have put some more time in this week looking for something else.  A lot of the jobs that are similar to part of my 43 years experience require lifting and/or crawling under things.  Well, I can't do that on demand anymore with my sciatic nerve and bad knee.  Maybe 42 years is why I can't now.    So, time will tell if I find something or just decide to sign up for Social Security and maybe pick up some odd work here and there.  Odd work!!  That is exactly what an odd guy is qualified for!

Anyway, I am planning on doing a little more on getting that table top fastened down.  Keep it up everyone!!!

Missabe is always good.  They took the ore to the lake, put it on a ship, dump it off at Conneaut, Ohio onto Bessemer & Lake Erie trains.  I do see a lot more CN engines heading up those Bessemer trains running through Butler these days however.

Mike g, I will be going more for a green colors .....Paul

I think that is a good choice Paul.  At least that is what I see around this part of the country.  Have you ever seen the Clarion River?  I-80 crosses it near the Clarion Pennsylvania exit.  It is really green!!  I wouldn't want to model that since it is the exception.

Piney Dam Reservoir    Water associated with the I80 crossing of the Clarion River is the back water from the linked dam site.  Deep water extends under the I80 bridge and upriver beyond the US 322 bridge.   I 80 appears upper left of the linked information.

Years ago the twin I80 bridges, Brookville PA, further east on I80 received a beautification award from then first lady, Lady Bird Johnson, Lyndon Johnson, wife.   Water supply, Brookville is North side of the bridges, but the area has changed greatly, since a devastating flood, several years ago, that destroy the Brookville water treatment facility, and associated dam, on the North Fork River.  A new water treatment plant has been built.

Yet another track plan tweak, that's what.

             IMG_2777

The siding for rail-to-road liquids transfer (I still need a tank truck model for the other half of the operation) used to be where the loose piece of Fastrack is situated in the pic. This prevented use of the main as a yard lead because a standing train blocked the siding. So I moved that spur behind the tipple for a more railroad-like plan where all industrial switching is from the yard rather than from the mainline.

Someday I'll hide an LED in Grandpa's PRR lantern to light the night sky.

Lew that is how I work on my layout also!  Try it.  Use it. Change it.   Has allowed me to come up with what I think are good ideas! LOL And the reason I haven't fastened my Fastrack to the bench work yet!

Cant wait to see what Paul gets done today!

More rain and flooding in the forecast.   UGGG the rain.

Mike G. looks like the cows and track might be here today!   YAY!!!   But sometimes my mail person wont leave things if its raining..............

I followed with that Bluetooth app last night again and I think I like it!   Kind of still like the universal remote better.  Using it on my Fire HD10 is pretty cool because it is HUGE!  Im having a hard time waiting for the new engines to come out this year so I can try them!!  EXCITED!!!

Brian, that is one interesting post. I have never seen a brown diesel before, and I had never  heard of the B&LE Railroad. Beginning in 1869 and operating under different names, it is a successful Class II railroad that services NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania, mostly be transporting iron ore and steel. It is currently owned by  Canadian National.

It took some work to learn that your brown diesels are from the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railroad. It too is owned by Canadian National and mostly ships ore to Great Lakes ports.

Lew, Your track layout changes have all been for the good!  I like how you are trying things out and seeing how they work!!

Mike, Yes, this has been the 5th place I've been laid off from in 43 years.  You would think I was an expert, but the rules of engagement change, so job hunting is a new adventure each time!  I don't need that kind of adventure!

Jim, There is just so much going on on this Forum, that it is easy to pass things by.  Somehow I missed the origination of the cow "mooove" when I was feeling lower!  I'm looking forward to seeing what it is.

Vincent, you are right about the Bessemer.  They have a small yard right here in Butler Pennsylvania where they interchange with the Buffalo and Pittsburgh.  There is also some traffic headed to and from AK Steel, so I hear lots of train action high up on my hill.  There was a lot more train action back when the Pullman Standard manufacturing factory was open.  They made thousands of PS2 covered hoppers here and one in Milwaukee bright yellow sits in the middle of the Pullman business park that has taken it's place.  The build date on the restored Milwaukee is 6-74, one month after I graduated from high school.

Well, I'm off this morning so I went to play with the Flyer and noticed the track moved over and a house knocked done. Our dog went nuts when I went for a walk this morning and ran into the edge of the floor layout. So after cleaning that up I ran my Flyer 4-4-2 and 4-6-2 (with smoke and choo-choo) and loaded some coal up. I'm getting ready to go to my parent's house for the afternoon. I'll see what I can get into with the O gauge today! Have a great day everyone.

Ya, looks like Brian is commemorating the movement of iron ore from the Iron Range in Minnesota to the Blast Furnaces of Pittsburgh. Nice Post, Brian. Just needs an Ore Boat pic.

Since this is becoming “Missabe Day” (Love it!) - I will share my latest project.

In 1930, the Steam Engine Maintenance Department of the Missabe shop ordered that cab awnings be installed as part of mechanical changes and upgrades performed at time of general service maintenance.  Even during the Great Depression, when iron ore hauling was at an all time low, the Missabe Railroad still kept its motive power upgraded and in top shape.

awning 1Awning2
After learning this, I assumed it was my duty to comply!   So, I have been busy the last two days updating my DM&IR mikado and 0-8-0 switcher.

The cab awnings were canvas and could be folded back when not needed.  I found some thin brass sheeting in my scrap materials drawer and purchased small brass rod stock at the local ACE hardware store.

DSC06310

These materials provided the perfect solution for fabricating the awnings.

DSC06305

I really like working with brass and solder because it's an instance bond.  No waiting for glue to dry.

DSC06312

The mikado’s received extended awnings providing the crew with shade.

DSC06342

The switching crew folded back the awnings and are now awaiting a sunnier day before resetting them.

DSC06345

Now to clean them up and get them primed and painted.

DSC06349

These little projects have been a nice diversion to occupied my time while my MTH TIU is away receiving a system upgrade.  I haven’t been able to operate trains on the layout for several weeks.

Cheers to all for the great posts and progress!  Dave - "Go Missabe!"

Painted the backs of the waterfalls with black paint I had. At the base of the falls I used a bit of hunter green. Then some Moss green, Olive Drab and  followed up with yellow silt. I'll let that dry real good then see if I am happy with it. This afternoon I will be removing the caulk from the wax paper. I think because I made it on the thin side I am going to have to have patience in removing it so I don't rip it. Pics.............Paul

Lew, it is just a big learning curve of trial and error. The last water I did I used Hunter Green for the deepest part and when all was said and done and the water in I did not like it. I thought the Hinter Green was too blue. So I got the Moss Green to use in its place. Once I am happy with the way it looks I start adding the falls and then the water.

Thanks guys for the compliments and the suggestions of color and pics to help me with this project.........Paul

Paul, I have never modeled water.   My only thought would be the darker the color, the deeper the water.   For what it's worth, I remember when Art, aka - Chugman, was painting his river bed and he started out with a light blue, he receive a big response regarding coloration and that darker, almost black, was the general response.    I really like your canyon project and I'm anxious to see it completed.   Thanks for sharing the steps along the way.   Wish I had an area for a water (river/falls) scene.

Cheers, Dave

Next door neighbor has a stone drive. I found a couple of nice stones thatwil go good in the river. I washed them up and they are drying. Then I worked on getting the silicone off the wax paper. Because it was thin it was a slow and tedious process to separate it but I finaly did it and I layed it against the lower falls to see how it would look. I think it is going to work so I have to make a few more. Then when I glue them in place I will high lght them with some white paint. That's it till after dinner I have some errands to run. Paul, The water project is shaping up very nicely.  Yes, experience on what you like is what is needed here.

Brian is on a roll for sure!!

Lew, I'm glad your brother-in-law had the experience and came back safely!  Considering the rough water in summer, think what they encountered on the fateful trip of the Edmund Fitzgerald!

Larry, I'm glad your station will be playing all your favorite hits!!

Lee, Wow, it broke down already!  I'm glad you have a crew with a hefty truck to take care of the problem.

Pete, Thank you so much!!  Yes, at the age when both my dad and father-in-law retired, I am looking for new work in a culture that is a bit hard to grasp.  I guess that is why when one recruiter asked me when I graduated from high school, and I told him 1974, he paused and said I wouldn't fit into their 'profile'.  LOL  Maybe not.  I'll bet his parents are younger than I am!  LOL

I did have a phone interview this week with a company that makes pharmaceutical dispensing systems for hospitals and other medical centers.  The lineup online is pretty impressive.  They are looking for second shift technical support personnel, and I do have a background they want, albeit mine is all more than 10 years behind today.  I have a nephew who has been working in marketing at that company for a few years, after he retired from low minor league professional hockey.  He's my wife's brother's son, so no one will guess we are related.  He likes the company, and the compensation.  He says they are great about training!  I need it!!   Who knows?  On the other hand, I could be signing up for Social Security after the unemployment runs out!  It is all in the Lord's hands for sure!!!

Well, I did do something on the layout today.  I added the brackets for the turnback loop table portion and fastened down the OSB.  I have the section of Homasote I had started to use in the little room on top, but not fastened down, and marked out the centerline for the 042 portion.  I sat on the floor and tried a cheap rolling stool I have, but it doesn't roll very well on the carpet.  I wan't down there very long.  My back is a little sore up near the belt line, but okay where my belligerent disc is.  Baby steps at this time.

Carsntrains, you have a neat layout, I like your country scene with the barn, older style home, and wind mill. The Lionel Radio Station is a fun accessory, the sound is not Bose Quality, the speaker is not a fat boy either,  but it’s a novelty piece, like a conversation piece, and it’s cool that it plays radio stations, or other music created from your smart devices.  I have a lot to learn about these blue tooth accessories. I appreciate your compliments. Happy Railroading.

Lee, hook em up, and take him back to the shop! Dave, fantastic work! Mark, keep your head up. I’m in a similar situation. I retired from my job a few months ago, and I’ve applied for new jobs that I’m more than qualified for, but I don’t “fit” their profile either. Something will come along for you soon .

Andy

Andy,  Thank you!  Something will come along for you too!

Dave AKA Darlander, I got one installed yesterday but didn't take any pictures. I am going to try another one today and I will take some pictures along the way.

Paul 2, things are really coming together! I hope you had a nice dinner with your wonderful wife!

Andy, Nice little video. Way to squeeze all 3 engines into such a short time!

Dave, your work is just AMAZING! Just think all that in just 5 days! Don't you sleep! LOL

Larry Thank you sir! I bet everyone is ready for spring or summer! That sure is a cool looking radio station, fits right in on your wonderful looking layout!

LEE, great job on the Mack tow truck!

Mark, good luck on the job search! Sounds like that company would be a good fit for you! The table looks good and check it out there is even some track! NICE! Your right Baby steps!

Jim, I am glad you got your turnouts, but more important the COWS have come home! Good luck on the hill and take your time on the sidings!

Yesterday I went out to the train room and installed my first ever Tortis switch machine along with 15 of track. Today I hope to install another switch machine and another switch or 2.

Everyone I hope you have a great Saturday!

Complements are welcome if any it’s hard to paint figures that have very shallow detailing. I painted these back in 1995 they came with the Revell  Mobil truck on my layout this morning thought I would try my hand at it. After I was done with paint him I lightly weathered him using one of my daughters soft makeup brushes

Hey Jim,

I really appreciate the question but no I'm just having fun and learning as I go.

Dave

You sure are making it look easy!   Thank you for sharing that "as you go"   Very good stuff!!!

Mike G. can you wire those up to be non derailing?   My manual turnouts will never be because I keep forgetting to set them right lol

Jim

Lee, great work on the worker! Nice transformation!

Jim, I don't think you have to because of the spring rod they use. You would have to ask someone else, but I will check the directions when I go back out today!

BRIAN< I need your help! You have every railroad picture known to man, can you find me a couple of a BN Crane car and tender?

Beats me. I got both photos off the web.16405894393_5309ffdf8e_bThere seems to be something unusual about the way they use this BN caboose.

Mark, glad you are able to do little bit at a time on your layout and that the pain has diminished for you.

Johan, great pics.

Dave, I have to call you the flash of scenery construction. Beautiful work in such a short period of time. One question.  What was your technique for your water. How did you get your colors...........Paul

Paul, Thank you!

Tony Hawk has finally semi-retired  into a more stationary carrier in the coopla 😎

Great pics all.  Love the Mack tow truck.  Mark hope you get feeling better.

For me my layout has a new look.  I just had the first cataract surgery done Thursday.  A real eye opener.  The colors I thought were getting a little dull are popping and my vision is back to 20-20 on my starboard.  First week of March I get the port side done.  All those small details on the engines especially are crisp and clear.  On the otherhand, I have discovered oh so many more wrinkles when shaving.

Thank you very much!  I'm not bad, just kind of plodding along today.    I had cataracts removed about a year and a half ago.  Details are much clearer, as are the wrinkles!!  My difference also was the cataracts had changed me from far sighted to near sighted in about a year.  I never had glasses that worked.  Now I wear reading glasses, but I think I'll need to go back to bifocals before long.

The truck driver looks great Lee!

I took a break from putting down some cork roadbed to take a look at this.  I need to figure out a short list of GarGraves and Ross track sections and switches I need since my track plan changed.
