Anybody see the NS 8500 and 8501? | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

I was in Roanoke on Sunday (the day AFTER the big move of course) and there were 2 Dash 8s (I think) outside the shops being worked on. One (the 8500) was definitely of Conrail heritage. They both had new cabs almost looking like they had the square lines of an SD40 Admiral cab. Both cabs were in primer with their numbers stenciled on in black. The center hoods of both units were off exposing their prime movers. Is this a new rebuild program maybe? No I didn't have a camera and didn't even consider my phone (DUH!).

These units are part of NS' "Dash 8.5" rebuilding program. Among the program's principal elements are an improved electrical system and enhanced emissions. Progressive Railroading has published an article about the program:

Those are new rebuilds that the NS is redoing .New cabs and a new design fuel efficient engine that the NS is trying out.

Gosh I hope their better than the original 8500's the NS had
