How do I get an lashup to work; Odyssey engine to keep pace with an engine with a Cruise commander?

I believe early ODY is not compatible, and  the recommendation is to turn off speed control for a lashup.  G

What are the two engines? Its difficult to get even similar engines running the same speed due to driver diameter and gear ratios using Lionel's command systems. Dissimilar engines like a steam engine and diesel are nearly impossible to get to run at the same speed.

Hard to believe the Cruise Commander doesn't have the power, they're rated as an 8 amp board.  I've never run across a situation where the Cruise Commander doesn't have sufficient power, I have one in an A-B-A that is running four motors.  Does the 3rd Rail have traction tires?  Are you sure this isn't wheel slip and not insufficient power?

I think he is referring to one engine not having the power to pull a train. Not uncommon for one of their steam engines not being able to pull the twelve 21" passenger cars made for the set. The NYC 20th Century Dreyfuss Hudson is an example.

True Pete, but it's not the Cruise Commander that's the issue.  Many (most) of the 3rd Rail steamers have no traction tires and don't have the pulling power of a similar Lionel or MTH locomotive.  I don't see many of the 3rd Rail diesels, but the one that I've seen at the club, the Reading F7, has no traction problems.

The problem is the 1 powered A unit does not have enough power, the passenger cars are pretty heavy and do not roll that well compared to other models but the detail is beyond anything else on the market!

Simply I need to power a B unit to help out the A unit.

I could just rip out the guts on the A unit and add a MTH DCS system in each A and B they match speeds no problem.

But I would prefer to figure out somehow to do a transplant into the B unit for the extra traction power of 2 engines.

But so far engines that I have tested can not get the speed to match up at all.

If I were to drop in a motor in the B unit would the TMCC board and Cruise commander have enough guts to simply wire in a wire from the A unit motor to the B unit motor so running 2 motors at the same time?? Or would I blow the board??

Otherwise where could I buy a similar TMCC board to run the motor??

He's not blaming the ERR board, just telling us what it has so that we know what he's got to work with.

Like stated above, try turning Odyssey and if possible turn the cruse off in the ERR boards too (I don't have any yet so I don't know if that's possible.).  Or, is this one of the newer ERR boards with the nudge setting?

Also just found out they are thinking of running a powered B unit to match perhaps will just wait it out might be a year but will be worth it.

For now can run with an MTH GP7 and with a bit of work can get them to run about the same speed and together pull the train.

You can only tinker with it, prior to Legacy lashups were very hit/miss

1) Use similar engines.

2) Turn off Cruise Control.

3) Make sure the engines are using the same about of speed steps.

Actually, if they were both ERR Cruise equipped, they have a nudge feature to match speeds.  However, if the two have different gear ratios, it's going to be very difficult to ever get them to MU over the full speed range.

If the passenger cars don't roll well, I'd start by seeing if something can be done there.

Humm one of our OGR advertisers has the F7B powered Legacy engine available for $250

Wonder if it would work for swapping over the powered chasis into the B unit that I have??

You might look at the gear ratios and wheel sizes of the two units. A grease pencil mark on the flywheel and on one driven wheel will allow you to determine the ratio, when you turn the flywheel by hand through one full revolution of the driven wheel.

If the driven wheels are the same size and the gear ratios are the same, you can equip both locos with the same control system and you are good to go.
