Despite having Legacy for several years, I only started playing seriously with momentum today - checking out my new Lionmaster Challenger!  I am curious:

Under TMCC (I think), momentum was a setting stored in the engine that determined its response to CAB1 commands.

Under Legacy, with Legacy control mode, it looks like momentum is implemented simply by modulating the speed commands issued by the CAB2 - at high momentum, the system ramps up speed steps more slowly.

  • Is it therefore true that when running in Legacy mode, there is no momentum information stored in the engine itself?

  • What about running a TMCC engine from the CAB2 in TMCC mode?  Is momentum also just a function of how the CAB2 issues commands, or is there a setting stored in the engine?

(On a side note, I am kind of blown away by the difference between my 2001-vintage Challenger and the 2009 model.  The difference in sound, smoke & control is amazing.  And it's still from the "golden era" of engine-specific Crewtalk!)

I'm thinking momentum is from the handheld. For example during lash ups all engines respond to momentum setting. Experimenting with momentum is a blast. Using the train brake and different momentum settings and speed settings you can get some incredible sounds, smoke outputs and more. There are an infinite number of variables. I think this area of fun can easily be miissed because Legacy offers so many features. I like that momentum buttons are so easy to get to.
