You could start by upgrading to 1.52, the current release. It's worth a shot... 
Not to say it's impossible, but I have had zero issue concerning battery drainage on any of the last few software releases including 1.51.
But on a note, the Feedback function was ramped up in the last few releases so if you are using that regularly, since it is more pronounced, that could be it.

That is what I am doing as well. Note that a "smart charger" is much better for your rechargeable batteries. They provide for longer battery life.
I'm very new with my cab-2. It is 1.52 r thanks to a forum member updating it for me.
In reference to the cab-2 has anyone used the Energizer Recharge Smart Charger with the 2300 mAh rechargeable batteries and had a issue with it?

My Legacy Remote was not going to sleep so it was draining the batteries. The letters would go off but the light would stay on. Then things just went down hill.The only way it would turn off was to pull the batteries. Sent the Legacy base and remote to Lionel . They did charging upgrade to The base. Replaced Remote PCB, matched software to V1.52 and tested. Man the thing works so much better all the way around since then. No they did not charge me for it. Ok here is the parts diode/zener smt/5.1 volt 500mw. Resistor/smt/20ohm1/8 watt. Fuse/bourns/smt/1.50amp63volt. Hope this helps.
