Earlier Marx with the wheels' gears down the flanges won't go through many switches, except Marx....has anybody had
experience with modifying other brands to allow these early engines to pass? I have a few kitbashed critters such as
a steam dummy I would like to run on modern trackwork...

One of our club members came up with this solution for his
Marx trains on Gar graves switches.
A clever idea. I like it.
I've never modified a switch, but I have taken a motor out of a 490 (with double reduction gears) and put it in a 999 (was a single reduction or fat wheel motor). I haven't gotten around to putting the siderods back on permanently, but it was a fairly straight forward swap except for the rods which need to be re rivited onto the wheels.
